Good Prospects For « Manawatu DEATH OF VALKYRIAN The Manawatu Kaeing Club has received excellent acceptances for Its winter meeting" to be held at Awapuui on Saturday. The fields are large in the flat events, and with several of the season's leading jumpers engaged the steeplechase and open hurdles will create widespread interest. The steeplechase course at Awapuni, which was remodelled a few seasons ago, provides a very fair test of jumping ability.

Uorak at Awapuni, When A. M. Wright returned from the Auckland winter meeting he brought back Borak and will train this gelding for Mr. C. Matthews, Hamilton. Borak is a tour-year-old by Niglitmarch from the Oaks winner Variant, but he has never lived up to his excellent breeding. He has not won a race since his two-year-old season. Wright left the hurdle winner Vitement tn the north to spell.

Season’s Biggest Winner. Itakanui is the season’s biggest stake winner to date, his success in the Cornwall Handicap bringing his total to which is £lll5 more than the sum credited to Kindergarten. Kakanul has had IS starts for live wins, six seconds and two thirds. Kindergarten has run six times for five wins and a second.

Trench Law Schooling. Trench Law, a Taranaki Cup winner, who was formerly owned in Wellington, is working well at Riccarton and lately has been schooled over the small hurdles. It is intended to qualify him as a hunter.

Condition of A. E. Eilis. Latest advice from Auckland regarding the condition of the jockey A. E. Ellis, who was severely injured in a fall with Evan’s Head in the Great Northern Hurdles, is that he is now oft the seriously ill list, and is showing definite signs of recovery. It is expected, however, that he will remain an inmate of the hospital for several weeks.

Successful Debut. When Half-and-Half won the Roslyn Steeplechase at the Dunedin meeting he was having his first start for the season, and was making his first attempt in the role of a ’chaser. Half-and-Half has also won on the fiat and over hurdles. He has been entered for jumping events at Wellington.

First Fall. , „ When The Dozer fell during the running of the Campbell Hurdles at Ellerslie it was the first time he had made a mistake or this nature in a hurdle race. He was fancied for the event and had just made a forward move in behind the leaders. He came to no harm from the mishap and is to be brought to the 'Wellington meeting. Spanish End Jumping. Spanish Lad, one of the useful southerners is the latest to be put to hurdling. He is by Balboa, several of whose progeny were successful jumpers. Doing Well. The Hastings correspondent of ine Dominion" writes that Boulder Dam has done very well since resuming racing at the Wanganui meeting. Death of Valhyrian. The death has occurred of the Englishbred stallion Valkyrlan, who was located in South Canterbury for several years past. He was foaled in 1017 and was imported to New Zealand by Dr. W. C. lUng, Auckland, in 1022. Valkyrian was by William the Third, the best staying son of St. Simon, from Valkyr by Eager <son of Enthusiast) from St. Natalia (half-sister to the Oaks winner La Sagesse). by Common from St. Mary by Hermit. It was intended’ to put him into training in New Zealand, but he met with an accident soon after his arrival. Valkyrian sired many useful horses, both flat, performers and junipers. Among them were Valpeen, winner of the Grand National Steeplechase twice, the Great Northern Steeplechase twice, and the Wellington Steeplechase; Slayer, Prince of Orange. Strip, Valarth, ■Vai Watch. Lord Vai. and good performers by him on the flat were Norseman. Shy, Prince Vai, and Vali. Valkvrian’s most notable contribution to racing history should be Valadore. who is the dam of Kindergarten. An one of “MeJl-of the rising two-year-■any, which is in A. Goodman’s stable She is a very true-gaited mover and looks likely to race early. This fillv comes from a well-performed family. Her dam was a full-sister to Susan and half-sister to Kentucky and Penzance. This is the family descending from Persia, a prolific dam of winners whose daughters are all breeding well. Looks the Part. ~ r , _ Tara King, the Beau Pere—Zarene colt ■which P. Burgees is training at Trentham for Jfessrs. T. J. and P. A. O Neill, V anganui, is probably the biggest two-year-old to hare raced this season. For all his size he is not coarse, and shows a lot of tlie Beau Pere quality, but he is still gross in condition, and is being taken along on a very easy preparation. 'His dam lett a ■Derby winner in Lowenberg and another good performer in Algerian, who was a full-brother to Tara King.

Notable Absentoos. Slayer, Dozie Boy and Kanui te Pal were notable absentees from the Manawatu steeplechase entries. Slayer was pulled up during the running of the Great 'Northern Steeplechase and did not start on the second day. Kanui te Pai fell in both the Great Northern and Winter Steeplechases, and Dozie Boy finished a poor fourth in the Winter Steeplechase at his only appearance at the Ellerslie meeting.

Yearling For Victoria. C. Boyle, who is training again at Awapuni, consigned the Battle Song—Lady Graceful colt, which he ibought on behalf of a Victorian trainer, to .Melbourne last week. Boyle is at present handling a filly of his own by Coronach from the Gay Lothario mare Gay Step.
