OBITUARY

Mr. W. S. Jones

An old identity of the Puketapu district, Mr. William Stanley Jones, J.l’., died recently at his residence, Kennedy Road, (Napier. He was born in Puketapu in (1875. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. William .James Jones, a well-known contractor in tlie Puketapu district in the early days. Mr. Jones assistedl his father in the contracting business, and he held the record for cartage of wool, with a six-horse team. Later he went to the Dunedin district, working on gold dredges. He married Miss Jessie Burns, of Dunedin, in 1903, and after his marriage settled, in Puketapu, where he took over his father’s business with his brothers, as Jones Bros. He also did a considerable amount of harvesting in the district. He was one of the first contractors to import a traction engine for cartage work on the Napier-Taihape road. After the earthquake he sold his property at Puketapu, and resided in retirement at Napier till his death. He is survived (by his wife and a family of four, Messrs. Keith and William Jones and Mesdames Miller and Hogan.
