THE RACING WORLD

Finished For Season VIRTUOSO TURNED OUT (By The Watcher.) Virtuoso has finished his racing for the present season and has been turned out. It was intended to send him to Kiccarton at Easter, but it was discovered that he was not entered for the Champagne Stakes.

Adding to Team. £ Mr. P. Louis. Of Wellington, added another purchase last week to Master Dasli aud Flying Hawk. This was Sandy Cape, a six-year-old gelding by Cape Hom irom a Gazeley mare, which carried his colours in the Poukawa Maiden at Hastings. Sandy Gape showed pace out In front for a while but finished only sixth. It was reported that Mr. Louis also made an oner tor Sir Bradbury.

Started Twice. . In spite of the hard going at Hastings three- horses started twice during Saturday’s racing. They were Mldian Star, le Ngarara and Daily Mail. Mldian -Star was twice placed, but Daily Mail only showed some early pace, and Te Ngarara did not come up nearly so well on the second occaslon.

Smart Sorts. Walk Off) the two-year-old winner at Hawke’s Bay is a bay gelding by Gynerium from Wasteland, a useful mare by Acre that was winning races a few years ago. Mr R. Gregory, who owns and trains W alx Off and Note Raid, who ran second, appears to have done pretty well in patronizing Gynerium as he has got speedy youngsters like Master Dash Note Raid and Walk Off, and moreover all colts. Note Raid looks an early winner.

For the Northern. Two steeplechasers In Slayer and Dozie Boy reappeared on the flat at Hastings on Saturday. Slayer, who is now with A. Jenkins at Opakl, is in the hurdle race next Saturday, but unless there is rain during the week to ease the track be will not be a runner. It is intended to get Slayer ready for the Great Northern. A similar programme is no doubt in view for Dozie Boy.

Not Good Enough. « * There was a lot of money for Mr. J. A. Hennah’s maiden Parvati, in the apprentices’ race on Saturday, but she ran poorly. Parvati is well bred, being by Bulandshar from Fondle, a half-sister to Cuddle aud Padishah, -but so far her form has not been up to her breeding.

Moderate. , , t , , Coronacc was ridden in the Hawke’s £>a.v Cup iby W. J. Broughton, at lOJlb. overweight, but she made only a moderate showing.

Change in Form. There was a remarkable difterence in the form in the King George Handicap at Manawatu and the Hawke’s Bay Cup. The Manawatu winner, Mahaina, was complete; ly outclassed at Hastings, while logi and Rakanui ran right up to their class. The consistent runner was Classform third at Manawatu and fourth at Hastings. Come' True, fourth at Manawatu, was also right out of it on Saturday.

Out of His Class. Broker’s Dream got the run of the race in the Hawke’s Bay Cun. and lay third to the home turn on the fence, but was .outclassed from that stage on.

Authoress rau a creditable race in the Hawke’s Bay Cup, and should be In good order for hurdling events.

Finished for Season. John Gay has finished racing for the season, and is to be returned to ids Amberley owner. Mr. H. D. Greenwood, to spell during the winter months. M. J. Wadley has won the Ashburton John Grigg stakes and the Metropolitan Handicap at t rentham with him this season. He has also been placed in most of Ids other starts, and has earned £1125 since last August. Arnstra, in the same ownership and stable, is also on the easy list.

Over 100 Scratchings. In spite of the fact that there were more than 110 scratchings, it was necessary- to run three races in divisions at the I>aj of Plenty Racing Club’s annual meeting nt Paeroa on Saturday. Many of the horses had dual engagements owing to the acceptances being taken 10 days belore tlie meeting and the club's action In that respect was not altogether approved by owners and trainers. The conditions tor racing were perfect, the weather being gloriously line and the course fast. All (lie winners wore heavily supported with the exception of Babrow and Powys, both of whom paid double figures. Babrow s performance in winning tlie second division of the Tauranga Cup was ins best to date, and lie ran out the mile and u quarter in fine style. Tlie first division of the Taurangn Cup was won by the win favourite. Volil’ox. who finished tractive!}’ after being well back with half a mile to go.

North Islanders nt Iticearlon. Tlie Thompson Handicap winner, Monte Cristo, is an interesting entry at the <’ J (-. Easter meeting. Other North Islanders in the leading events are Hie Champ, <Poutatau, Theolateral, Daljarrock, Lowry Bay, Palora, Gayest Son imd Lam-bourn. El Good U -Scout did not train on as satisfactorily ns expected, and F. Christinas, who hoped to race him nt Easter, has abandoned tlie idea, one of Good Scouts legs having filled. Not Out was also lame after a short sprint during last week. .Ilie prospects of his standing a preparation while the tracks remain hard are not good :11c broke down badly last season and was given to his trainer. F. A. Roberts, by Messrs. C. M. Turrell and It. G. G. Westcnra.

It’s A Terrible War. Believe it or not, this is true. Two mothers meet. One has all three sons serving, the youngest just starting his operational solo Hying. Mother No. 2, with one son, got him a job on a farm, an essential occupation and so exempt. Naturally talk turns to the sons, and mother No. 1 expresses her anxiety now that her youngest is Hying. “Yes,” says mother No. 2, “I can’t sleep at night worrying about . I’m so afraid he II get gored by a bull.”

Reminder. Wednesday, 8 p.m.—Hawkes Bay accep tanccs.
