ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF AGRICULTURE

Mr. Robert Browne Tenuent, since 1934 director of the fields division, Department of agriculture, has been appointed assistant director-general of the Department of Agriculture. Born in Scotland in 1893, Mr. Jenr.ent attended the Queensland Agricultural College in 4014, where he gained diplomas in agriculture and then joined the field staff of the Queensland Department of Agriculture. He saw service in the Great War with the A.l.h. and was discharged from the army Tilth the rank of lieutenant. In 1918 Mr. Tenuent attended the West of Scotland Dairy School, whore he gained the National Dairy Diploma. After the war he returned to the Queensland Department of Agriculture and in 1921 came to New Zealand to join lhe Department of Agricullure at Dunedin ns instructor

in agriculture. Subsequently he was appointed fields superintendent lor tl' p Qtngo-Soulhhind district ami iu 1934 was promoted to director of the lields division and transferred to Wellington. Mr. Tenuent, who is widely known to farmers, is the author of a number of papers on agriculture, particularly in relation to irrigation, in connexion with which matter he visited the U.S.A He has also been associated ivith tan ous primary industry activities, including the riant Research Bureau, the Wheat Research Institute, ami the National Council of Primary I’roductloU Mr. I’. \V. Smallfield.

The appointment is also announced of Mr. Percy Walton Sinallfield to succeed Mr. Tennent ns director of the lielils division. Born in 1898, Mr. Smalltield was educated at the Auckland Grammai School, Auckland University College, am. Canterbury Agrieultural College. lie graduated B.Agr.Sc. and joined the Department of Agriculture as assistant instructor in agriculture. Auckland, tn February, 1921. lie was translerred to the Ruakura farm of instruction as instructor in charge of the Ruakura barm Training College in June. 1923. ami was appointed fields superintendent, Attckland. in Mav. 1928. Mr. Sinallfield graduated M.Agr.Se. He was engagiu in laml development work tinder the Land Daws Amendment Act, and developed large areas of scrub land for settlement in Uotorun and in tin 1 South anti North Auckland districts. Appointed superintendent of the Rtiaknra Animal Research Station in .1939, lie was engaged in animal nutrition ant. pasture research work. lie was up pointed superintendent of services vegetable production in May. 1942, and sutierintended the cultivation of, JJOO acres of vegetables for the Armed Forces. He is tlie author of several articles on farming and farm research work in the Auckland dislricl ; grassing of iniunee land, and lopdressing and farming in the Auckland Province.
