ORDER TO REGISTER

Scientists And Technicians RECORD TO BE COMPILED

All men with qualifications in science and engineering must now give details of their qualifications and their present work. In an order signed yesterday, the Minister of Industrial Manpower, slr. McLagan, has called upon all persons with these qualifications to apply for registration by completing a special form provided for the purpose. “Positions are arising,” said the Minister, “which call for men with particular training in scientific, engineering and other similar branches of knowledge, and it is at times difficult to locate the rtghc. men to fill’these positions. It is known that some men with particularly good qualifications are at present located in the ordinary ranks of the forces and others are engaged in clerical and other work which cannot be regarded as important. Up to the present there has not been any comprehensive record containing details of all of these men, and it is the purpose of the present registration to compile as complete a record as is possible.” The classes of persons who must now register are as follows: — (a) Persons holding a Bachelors degree or a higher degree of the University of New Zealand in science, agricultural science, forestry science, or home science, or in engineering or architecture. (b) Persons holding any corresponding degree of any other university or educational institution. (c) Persons who have passed in New Zealand or elsewhere an examination in any one or more of the technical subjects prescribed for any such degree. (d) Persons who, by virtue, of their scientific or technical attainments, are members of any institute or other association (whether formed in New Zealand or elsewhere) of physicists, engineers, or chemists (not being pharmaceutical chemists). Doctors Excluded. The order does not apply, however, to registered medical practitioners engaged in the practice of their profession, or to students of the Otago Medical School. Persons who have advanced in mathematics to Stage 2 or beyond should register, even though they may not hold a science degree, but those who have not advanced beyond Stage 1 in mathematics should not register unless they have_ also passed at least one other unit of a science subject. Any person with special experience or qualifications which are similar to any of the specified classes, but which arc not specifically covered by the above list, should give details of his qualifications in the same way as if he were actually included in the list. “It should be clearly understood,” said the Minister, “that this Order covers students as well as graduates, members of the forces as well as civilians, women as well as men, and aliens as well as British subjects.”

The method of registration is to complete a special form which is obtainable at. district manpower offices located at all the main centres, or which may be obtained from the Controller of Manpower, National Service Department, Wellington, on request. Men or women in the Army or Air Force may obtain their forms through their commanding officers.

The order conies into force today. The time allowed for completion of the registration is 14 days.
