TENSE ATMOSPHERE
HERALDS BATTLE El Agheila Gun Duel / LONDON, December 2. Zero hour seems close at hand for the assault in force of the British Eighth Army in Libya against El Agheila. The tense atmosphere now prevailing on the front is pictured by a correspondent, who says there is every sign that the remaining Axis forces on the western border of Cyrenaica are standing with all the power they can muster on the strong natural defensive positions round El Agheila. The position is composed of marsh, escarpment, valley, and broken ground for miles. The guns of both sides have been blasting away, and British fighter planes maintain a ceaseless patrol over the forward troops.
The correspondent says: “We can de, pend on it that behind their rearguards and the first series of natural defences round El Agheila the German and Italian commanders are doing all they can to make a fight of it, and as our Eighth Army goes up to them they can’t be feeling too happy about their resources and supplies and reinforcement position. There is a battle coming, all right; there is no doubt about that.” '
