RUBBER SHORTAGE
Question Of Responsibility 'By Telegraph Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, August 12. Replying to a recent statement by lhe Auckland Bureau of Importers tliat the rubber shortage was due to the refusal of Mr. Nash to grant import licences in 1939-40, the Minister of Transport, Mr. Semple, said that this was untrue. Every country was in the same position and to blame Mr. Nash for the shortage in New Zealand was as unfair as to blame him for the shortage in the whole British Empire. A cable just received from Canada showed the position to lie very serious there and America had denied" tyres to civilians for three years. If a .scajiegoat was needed, the bureau should blame the Malayan rubiter kings who refused to sell at the price offered by the Soviet befoie the Japanese invaders got the whole lot.
