Some New Gains In Solomons TOUGH DEFENCE LONDON, August 12. An Australian correspondent at an advanced Allied base says that while there is no hard news of the battle in the Solomons the general feeling is that our forces are still making progress toward their objective, that is, the occupation of the islands in the Tulagi area. _ the whole weight of the offensive has been thrown against Tulagi and Guadalcanal- Islands, and it is believed that .United States marines and other shock troops are firmly established in this area. Bitter fighting is in progress as our forces keep up intensive pressure against the enemy. Allied naval forces are still giving suppor to the ground troops in face of heavy attacks from land-based Japanese “United States marines have opened the door to the Allied offensive in the south Pacific,” said a statement from the Marine Corps headquarters in Washington yesterday, “The marines had been practising invasion tactics day and night as a prelude to the landing the Solomons, including intensive jungle warfare combined with landing exercises. The marines were specially trained for amphibious operations. They are now engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the Japanese in the Solomons.” , The Navy Department says that while the action in the tulagi area continues nothing further can be reported at the momenf. ' San Francisco radio said yesterday morning that American foices have landed tanks in the Tulagi area of the Solomons, where bridgeheads have been established. Flying Fortresses are helping to cover the American assault.
