AUSSIE RA WINS HUNT CUP

West Coast Steeples To Indian Sun FIRST ROUND AGAIN Heavy rain for the first three races and showers for the remainder of the afternoon made conditions unpleasant for ths combined race meeting staged at Marton on Saturday' by the Rangitikel and Manawatu Hunt Clubs. The track was very heavy. . „ Trent ham form worked out t airly well, Aussie Ra and Indian Sun, who were minor place-fillers at. the Wellington meeting. winning the two steeplechase events. First Round, a hack double winner at. Trentham, made a successful debut in open company, winning the President’s Handicap in very game fashion after being badly checked at the distance. There was an average attendance and the totalizator handled £18,124/10/-. At the Rangitikei Hunt meeting on the same course last year £21,398/10/- was put through. tt i Black Saint tried to win the Hack Hurdles all the way and might have done so'had he jumped better. Mataroa High Caste and Namesake followed him to the last hurdle and in the final 100 yards Half. Caste ran through to win comfortably from Black Saint with Mataroa a moderate third and Young Charles coming from the back to take fourth. Colossal Chief was in charge at the end of two furlongs, where his rider’s saddle broke in halves and the horse had to be pulled up. Handling the conditions well, Golden Acre finished too solidly for the field in the Flying Handicap. He Avas back six places behind Rackman, Sun Valley, The Grand, Noble Eagle and Leisurely - running across the top bend toward the straight. The Grand and Rackman had charge at the distance, but Goßlen Acre ran them down to win easily by three lengths, with The Grand comfortably holding second place from Rackman. Miner s Hope finished fourth ahead of Te Marua and Leisurely. , Pekoe, the topweight, • was . much too good for his five opponents in the Ladies’ Bracelet for amateur riders. Inventor made most of the pace, but Pekoe ran past him in the straight to win by a comfortable margin. Vengeance was a poor third, but well clear of the others. Aussie Ra and Beau Monde always looked like filling the main places over the final round of the Hunt Cup Steeplechase in which only three runners finished. Aussie Ra was more forward than Beau Monde and he ran on to . score by five lengths. Beau Monde, who had not raced since September, jumped better than lie has ever done before. The favourite, Lady Callaghan, was a poor third 100 yards behind the first two. Acrobat fell, Ruenzori, Mamaku and Smooger were pulled up, and Promenade and Henry of Huntingdon ran off. Don Quex ran up to his Parliamentary Handicap form to win the Champion Hack Cup. He was second in most of the running to Sir Fox, with Kehua, Young Jim, All Bunsby and Courting ahead of the others. Sir Fox hung on to Don Quex for half the length of the straight, but in the last furlong Don Quex drew out to win by two lengths. AH Bunsby finished over the others for third and Young Jim, who moved about in the going, was fourth with Curtail, Kehua and Red Chief in line close up, and then a big gap to Courting who headed the others. Bendemeer was never going like a place-getter. The jumping in the West Coast Steeplechase was very poor. Coilibri led for a round, chancing several fences, and then Indian Sun took over. He had two lives, but he stood up and over the concluding, half-mile his only serious opponent was Promenade, who forced him to a < twolength decision, -though Indian Sun did not look in danger of defeat. Cherry Plum made heavy weather of the track conditions and nearly fell twice. He was a poor third. Gay Fox was prominent for a round and a half, but was very tired in fourth place at the finish. Hyderabad fell. There was an exciting finish in the President’s Handicap, the decision going to the favourite First Round from Duncannon and Triple Crown. Screen Star made the early pace from Triple Crown, First Round, Augment, Duncannon, Tq Ore and Noble Fox Screen ' Star, Duncannon, First Round and Triple Crown were the lenders into the straight, and at the distance First Round was checked when trying, to get to the front. Duncannon and Triple Crown went on together, but First Round came with a late run on the fence and she got up In the last stride to win by half a head from Duncannon with Triple Crown a short neck away third. Saxon Tor beat the others home with Dark Eagle, Augment and Screen Star heading them. Duality drew the outside position at the barrier and though he worked through to fifth place at the three furlongs he never looked a prospect. Rehandicapped 61b. for his earlier success. Golden Acre downed the favourite, Lady Virginia, in the concluding event. Golden Acre trailed AH Bunsby and Lady Virginia to the straight and at the distance the three were in line. I,ady Mrglniu fought on gamely, but Golden Acre took her measure about 100 yards from the post and drew out to win by two lengths. Lady Virginia held second money by a head from All Bunsby, and Hamish, who was hampered in the early running, finished well for fourth place with Young Jim almost in line. <
