RUSSIAN SUPPLIES TO CHINA

Recently-Built Highway CHUNGKING, July 17. Chungking is receiving war supplies from Russia over a 2800-inile highway constructed mostly in the last five years. Wong Wen-lino, the Chinese Minister of Economies, who has completed an inspection of the highway, said that vital materials were moving to Chungking in modern trucks ami carts and on thousands of camels. Tlie western terminus of tlie highway is at Tacheng, on tlie border of China and Russian Turkestan, where it joins a Russian highway leading to Almaata. The road partly follows ancient trails over the mountains of northern Szechwan and southern Shensi. The Chinese report continuing activity in Chekiang without major changes in tlie position. Tlie Central News Agency states Unit the Chinese recaptured the strategic river town of San Kiang-Kou, 31 miles southward of Ninchang. General Stilwell’s communique reports that United States bombers, escorted by fighters, attacked Hankow witli very satisfactory results. Tile Chinese High Command announced tlie death from wounds of Major-General Tai-lai, a divisional commander of the Chinese Expeditionary Force in Burma, and hero of tlie Battle of Toungoo, in which 5000 Japanese were killed.

An air communique from New Delhi states that; R.A.F. bombers attacked Kaiewa in Upper Burma on Wednesday, and dropped bombs on tlie centre of the town. A low-flying attack was made on barges at Kollmyo. Yesterday Blenheims bombed the 'dockyard and attacked huts on Oyster Island with machinegun lire. All the planes returned.
