Late News STALIN GONE TO STALINGRAD?
Familiar Terrain SOVIET OFFENSIVE AT VORONEZH (Received July 18, 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 17. A Stockholm, message says that German sources quote reports from Ankara that M. Stalin has gone to Stalingrad and will personally direct its defence, and that the Russian (thief of the General Staff is already in Stalingrad, round which strong reinforcements of men and material of the newly-formed Central Asiatic Army are concentrated. It is recalled in London that M. Stalin was reputedly the author of Voroshilov’s successful defence of Stalingrad against the Whites in the Civil War. Moscow radio says that, following the arrival of new reserves, the Red Army has. taken the offensive in several sectors of the Voronezh front, where the situation has become more favourable. Fighting is progressing on both banks of the Don, with positions changing hands repeatedly. Ihe German advance in several sectois of the Voronezh front-has been stopped, and on others the enemy has been pushed back after suffering heavy losses. A Russian communique reports intense fighting in the Voronezh area, where the Red Army prevented the Germans from advancing. The .fighting is also intense south-east of Millerovo, where the Russian fighting withdrawal continues.
