Late News NAZIS REOPEN GAP

Junction North Qf Rezegh FIERCE BATTLE CONTINUES LONDON, December 2. A Cairo headquarters communique announces that Axis forces in ■further heavy attacks, have succeeded in joining across /the corridor south of Tobruk. From this it would appear that the New Zealanders’ counter-attack-, reported yesterday, whicli forced tlie enemy baclt from tlie positions to whicli they had penetrated, was only temporarily successful. The British communique states that in the fluid battle which lias raged on tlie main front with local fluctuations over a very great area since November 20 the centre- of gravity Ims altered daily as British or German tanks mass for attack or counter-attack. Yesterday the enemy threw into tlie batttie all available armoured forces on .a comparatively narrow front. There was heavy fighting throughout the day in the area at and north of Sidi Rezegh, and German forces succeeded iir effecting a junction. Imperial air activity included heavy operations in the Sidi Rezegh zone.
