PRAISE FOR MINERS

Minister Calls For Greater War Effort (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WESTPORT, December 1. At a public meeting iu the Victoria Theatre tonight, the Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb, ‘emphasized the gravity of the international situation and called on the people for still further efforts to help the Empire and Allies in their great struggle against forces of evil. He was particularly pleased, he said, with the way in which the miners in the Buller district were working. This showed a cool realization of the seriousness of the international situation. The Minister of National Service, Mr. Semple, said no one country was as well off as New Zealand with its 40hour week and social security and other advantages. He found in Australia similar conditions in many respects to those that existed there when he was a boy, while in New Zealand the people had moved onward in bettering conditions. “As for the snarling snaffle busters who call themselves critics,” said the speaker, “let me tell them that no people are as free as or better off than these in New Zealand.”
