In a review of recent company earnings in Australia, the Sydney Stock Exchange Bureau states that improved purchasin ß power has been reflected in a stronger demand for goods and. services, and the majority of companies report a larger volume of business this year. Taxation and other costs, however, have expanded more than proportionately.. The figures of a number of representative companies indicate that from 1939 to 1941' gross profits have improved 19.4 per cent., but tax provision rose more than 121 per cent., and net earnings receded by approximately 11J per cent. .
