CRIMEA CLAIM
162 Soviet Ships Sunk Or Damaged
LONDON, November 17.
The German military spokesman claimed that while attempting to evacuate troops from the Crimea, nine Soviet warships were sunk by bombs and 24 badly damaged. Sixty Russian merchantmen of a tonnage of 234,000 were sunk in the same operations and 69 damaged. “The destruction of these ships, it was stated, “means that masses of men and material cannot be removed from the Crimea. With the capture of Kerch, the German and Rumanian troops are now facing the Caucasian foreground, while the Kerch Straits are closed to all Soviet traffic. This means that all ports on the eastern side of the Sea of Azov from Rostov to Temryuk are cut off from communication with the south.” The special announcement from Herr Hitler’s headquarters declaring that Kerch has been captured said that the whole of the eastern Crimea is now iu German hands. It claimed that 100,000 Russian prisoners have been taken so far in the Crimean campaign.
