Brigade Has Busy Day Five calls were made on the Wellington Fire Brigade yesterday. One was to a house in Vogeltown, one to Hope Gibbons' Buildings, and one to a washhouse in Hataitai. There were also two large gorse fires in Karori. Firemen were handicapped by problems with the water supply, as the house was set well back from the street, but by using )ong feeder lines from the mains, they managed to get a continuous supply. One delivery of hose was taken up the staircase, an'd another concentrated on the rear of the building, and the fire was brought under control inside 20 minutes. The building, which is a private residence, was owned and occupied by Mrs. L. M. MclnneA. Rooms in the front portion were used as a dog hospital. Both the building and its contents were insured.
Two machines from the Central station responded to a call received at 2.30 p,m., when a washhouse at 34 Konini Road, Hataitai, caught fire. Slight damage was done to the building.
Another fire occurred at 3 p.m. in Hope Gibbons’ Buildings, when stock in the National Service Department caught fire. This outbreak was extinguished by members of the staff, but an engine from the Central station attended.
