SUMMER SHOW

East Harbour Society

The East Harbour Horticultural Society’s summer show was held on Saturday and was opened by Madame Feng Wang, who was accompanied by Mr. fFeng Waug, Chinese Consul. In welcoming Matlame Wang, Mr. E. H. Anderson, president of the society, said how pleased they all were to have her with them at the show. He referred to China as the original habitat of many of the flowers which she would see in the hall. Madame Wang, who was presented with a bouquet of roses by Miss Kathleen Langford, expressed her pleasure in being present and congratulated the society on its wonderful display. She said that on her many visits to Eastbourne she had been impressed by the numerous beautiful gardens. Madame Wang declared the show open and wished it every success. The exhibits were of a high standard, the rose section having some outstanding blooms. “William Orr” was the champion rose, shown by Mr. W. E. Askwith, who also won the Mrs. Knox Gilmer challenge rose bowl for most points in the rose section. The pansies and violas were exceptionally good, and there were many choice blooms in the miscellaneous section. Mr. H. F. Anstis judged these and the vegetable section. Miss .Hall, who judged the decorative section, expressed her pleasure at the quality of the work, and was particularly impressed by the sand flower ladies in the children's section, remarking that it was the best she had seen in this class. A feature of the show was a novel and most attractive display by the Howard Point-Lowry Bay part of the society’s district. In an area of 15ft. by sft. was set out a comprehensive garden in miniature. In the foreground was a water lily pond surrounded by massed beds ol cinerarias, pansies, roses, and a velvety lawn. A crazy pavement and steps led to the back terrace, where flourished graceful beech, trees, rhododendrons, and rare and beautiful shrubs. The garden circle of the Eastbourne Townswomen's Guild staged an attractive table of Iblooms from its memliters’ gardens. Following i» the prize list:' —
