GLADYNEV REWARDED IN METROPOLITAN

Treasurer’s Win Hooted MEMBERS’ TO PAY ROLL

Dominion Special Service.

CHRISTCHURCH, November 10. The weather wag tine and there was a large attendance for the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting. The track was hard. The totalizator handled £87,949/10/- compared with £83,415/10/- on the final day last year. For the meeting £263,720 was handled against £253,204 last year, an increase of £10,516. The field for the Suburban Handicap got away on favourable terms, but Norse, Georgia and Blue Abbey appeared l to collide, and Blue Abbey’s rider was squeezed out of the saddle. Highland Dance soon took up the role of pacemaker and led round the top and into the straight three lengths in front ot Great Flight, with Benevolent, Lunana, Maharajah and Ferriby handy. Benevolent and Lunaria challenged the leader a furlong from home, and Lunaria carried on to gradually wear him down and beat him comfortably. In a close tussle for the minor places, Highland Dance stayed' on long enough to beat Maharajah, w’ho just headed Benevolent on the post. Great Flight, Dividend and Rue were next The winner was purchased a few weeks back by the former jockey, G. Humphries. Maharajah was having his first race at the meeting, and was in stronger demand’ than his North Island form warranted. Atreus Wins Again.

Atreus was preferred to The Champ in the Seymour Hack Handicap, and they finished as supported. The Champ was the early leader from Grey Night and Atreus, 'but at the end of two furlongs Maggiore took charge from ihe Champ, Chandelier, Blue Coat, Grey Night and Atreus. Maggiore . led into the straight from Blue Coat, The Champ, Chandelier and Atreus, but was in trouble a furlong from home, where ihe Champ showed’ out in front with Atreus in close pursuit. A’ little further on Atreus commenced to draw away and went on to record a very easy win from Chandelier, who overhauled The Champ on the post. Dinah Dhu finished' strongly into fourth place half a length away in front of Grey Night, Blue Coat, Maggiore, Ann Mie and Light Cavalry. Atreus bad a very decisive win going away. / An Unpopular Win.

The result of the Cressy Handicap was very unpopular with Leger patrons, as Treasurer, who had failed previously at the meeting when in keen demand, recorded one of the easiest wins of the Craig'lea. and Cymric carried the field along at a good pace to the straight entrance, with Lord Nuffield, Military Maid, Night Pal, Treasurer, Siglow and Wild Talk following. With less than a furlong to go, Treasurer drew to the front, and went on to win wjthout any pressure. Haughty Winner made a game attempt, but had no chance with the winner. Military Maid, having her first outing in open company, was a good third, beating King’s Toy.st and Siglow together, with Lord 1 Nuilield and Wild Talk following. Another Win For Dominate. The Pioneer Handicap produced an interesting tussle over the last furlong. Prince Leighon led to the course proper from Trapeze, King Herod, Retriever, Indian Sign and Dominate. Prince Leighon appeared to be going on - for a surprise win but Dominate, with a brilliant burst of speed on the inside, gradually overhauledl hint, and won well by half a length from Prince Leighon, who similarly beat Retriever. Indian Sign was a length away in front of Wedding Ring and Cross Question. This was Dominate’s third successive win, and there is no doubt about him being one of the best of the. season. Gladynev Duly Rewarded. The Metropolitan Handicap attracted a strong field, and in a big pool Yogi was a little better supported than Gladynev. Rakanui quickly ran to the front from a perfect start, and nearly succeeded in staying there throughout. He was followed into the back stretch by Yogi, The Monarch, The Raker, Trench Law, Gladynev, and Blue Border, with Wardress and Iceland Spar at the tail, but not far from the leaders. There was not much change until the home turn, where Trench Law moved into third place from Rakanui and The Raker, with Yogi, Blue Border, Gladynev and Piastre also prominent. Rakanui still held his place a furlong from home, and a little further on, Gladynev came out to tackle him, with Blue Border also putting in a promising challenge. The actual finish, however, was confined to Rakanui and Gladynev, and they fought out a memorable duel, Gladynev getting up in the last stride to gain the narrowest of verdicts. Blue Border continued his run for third money, two lengths in front of Yogi, who was followed at intervals by Wardress, Piastre, The Monarch, Trench Law, and Iceland Spar in that order. Good Effort by The Joker.

The Joker was responsible for another sterling effort to win the Hagley Hack Handicap. , . Muffler, Good Health, and Shanghai Lily were slow to move off, and Royoney took charge early from Gunyah and Moderate, and led into the. straight from Bhyto, Gunyah, Foxette, and The Joker. Foxette was in front inside the final furlong, but The Joker then put in his claim, and had no trouble in winning going away. Foxette held on for an easy second placing from Muffler, who did well after losing a lot of ground at the start. Gunyah was two lengths away in front of .Moderate, Good Health, Shanghai Lily and Royoney. Irate Runs on Well.

In the Stonyliurst Handicap, for three-year-olds, Lone Bird was the first to show out, but at the end of two furlongs Sir Gundi had charge from Lone. Bird, Irate, Duljarrock, and Penny Whistle. Sir Gundi was clear entering the straight from Irate, Kevin, Daljarroek, and Penny Whistle, with Good Scout becoming prominent. Irate and Good Scout then drew up to Sir Gundi nearing the p.ftst, and Penny Whistle challenged wide out. In an exciting tussle Irate got up to beat Sir Gundi, with Good Scout finishing fast into third place, a neck in front of Penny Whistle, who was near the outside fence. There was then a big gap to Daljarroek. Pay Holl scored a surprise win in rhe Members' Handicap. She went to the front after a furlong had been covered, and stayed there for the remainder of the journey. She was followed into the straight by her stablemate, Duncannon, Enrich, Rakahanga, Wild Fox, and Eulogist, and was never in danger. Duncannon stayed on for third money, well clear of Eulogist, who was two lengths in front of Not Out, Enrich, and Wild Fox next.
