Royal Air Force Starts Large Fires MIDDLE EAST ACTIVITY

(Received November 16, 6 p.m.) RUGBY, November 15.

The communique issued yesterday by Royal Air Force headquarters in the Middle East states that Naples was again successfully attacked by heavy bombers of the R.A.F. during Tuesday night. Large fires were started in the marshalling yards and along the railway lines. Bombs were also seen to fall on an air frame factory and particularly violent explosions occurred when a building, believed to be a power station, was hit. The seaplane base and railway station at Syracuse in Sicily were also attacked on the same night. Fires visible SO miles away were started. Objectives in Libya were attacked on Tuesday night. At Benghazi stores and marshalling yards were bombed. One large bomb which burst in the marshalling yards extinguished three searchlights. At Dorna stores and motor transports were bombed. Maryland bombers of the South African Air Force attacked and dispersed aircraft at Benina aerodrome on Thursday. Dust storms made the visibility bad and although bombs were seen to fall among the aircraft the damage could not be assessed. During the same morning other Maryland, bombers of the S.A.A.F. attacked the barracks and dispersed aircraft at Berka aerodrome. A direct hit was obtained on the barracks. Aircraft of the S.A.AIF. bombed and machinegunned enemy positions at. Fero Aber, on the north-east shore of Lake Tana in Abyssinia on Tuesday. Trenches were hit and a machinegun post silenced. From all these operations two of our aircraft are missing. Libya And Abyssinia. A communique issued today states that objectives at Benghazi, Derna and Bardiii were raided by the R.A.F. on Thursday night. Owing to bad weather the results could not be observed. Yesterday S.A.A.F. Maryland aircraft effectively bombed aerdroines at Barce, starting fires on the landing grounds. Martuba aerodrome was also attacked. During Wednesday our lighters intercepted a Junkers 88 over the Western Desert. It was last seen going out to sea with one engine on fire. In Abyssinia our aircraft bombed and machinegunned enemy positions and other objectives on the AzozoGorgora road and elsewhere in the Gouda region. . From these and other operations all our aircraft returned safely. On Wednesday night enemy aircraft dropped incendiary bombs and 28 highexplosive bombs near Bagush, in North Africa. There was no damage or casualties.
