SCOUT WEEK TO BE HELD

Campaign For More Members Dominion Special Service.

CHRISTCHURCH, November 15.

A vigorous campaign for the extension of the boy scout movement in. New Zealand by means of a Scout Week is to be held in February of next year, and the objects underlying _ the drive were explained by Commissioner J. J. Cormick, of Auckland, honorary Dominion organizer for Scout Week, to a large and enthusiastic public meeting held in the concert hall of the Young Men’s Christian Association. The mayor, Mr. E. H. Andrews, presided. At a recent conference of boy scout commissioners in Wellington, the Gov-ernor-General said: “Every child in New Zealand should be a scout or a guide, a wolf cub or a brownie. That must be our aim.” The result of this declaration of the necessity for the training of the country’s yojuth on Tines which would help to reduce the alarming incidence of juvenile crime and to instil the principles of good citizenship in the men and women of tomorrow had been the plan for this vigorous campaign in February, Mr. Cormick said. The object of the display was to bring home forcibly to all who had the future welfare of the country at heart the undeniable value to the community of a youth trained along the lines of self-re-liance, self-discipline and good citizenship. _ Scout Week, which would consist or a comprehensive display of scouting activities, as well as a properly-organ-ized procession of floats, would extend from Fridav, February 20, to Sunday, February 22. The abjective of the displays was to secure 2000 new scouters and helpers, and the 30,000 new cubs scouts and rovers his Excellency had called for. . Mr. Cormick emphasized that Scout Week was not a money-making venture. No street collections would be carried out, and no appeals for financial assistance would be made.
