New Zealander For British Army

COLONEL G. H. CLIFTON

Lieutenant-Colonel G. H. < Clifton, M.C., N.Z.S.C., officer commanding the Divisional Engineers, 2nd N.Z.E.F., has been promoted to colonel and seconded to the British Army as chief engineer to the 30th Corps. He will act in an advisory capacity to the corps commander.

Colonel Clifton, who was born at Napier, was a cadet at Duntroon Royal Military College 1915 till 1918, .when he graduated. He was then appointed a lieutenant in the New Zealand Staff Corps. In September, 1919, he went to India and served in Waziristan, where he won the Military Cross. He returned to New Zealand in .1921 and in 1924 he went to England. There he did a two years’ course at the School of Engineering, Chatham, and was promoted captain. Returning to New Zealand, he held the appointments of ’adjutant, Northern Depot, New Zealand Engineers, and adjutant, Auckland Mounted Rifles, till he went to England again in November, 1932, to attend a course at the Staff College, Camberley. He returned to New Zealand in October, 1£)35. From then till his appointment as the commandant of the Northern District School of Instruction, Narrow Neck, shortly after war 'began, Colonel Clifton was in the Intelligence Section, General Staff, Army Headquarters. From Narrow Neck he went to the Expeditionary Force iu February, 1940, as brigade major, sth New Zealand Infantry Brigade, ikfter service in Britain he went to Egypt and later served in Greece. He was promoted lieuten-ant-colonel and to commantj the Divisional Engineers in January, 1941.
