BORDER CARNATIONS

Need Disbudding Border carnations should be disbudded. It is most unwise to allow every little side bud to remain, spoiling the shape of the good buds and causing them to burst their calyces. Almost invariably there are, at the top of a carnation flower stem, three buds, a markedly large one, and a smaller one' on each side to keep it company. Remove the two latter. There may also be long side stems, arising from toward the base «,f this main stem, each with the triple bud formation. In each case remove the two side buds. Cut off the side stems altogether if you desire blooms of exceptional quality. Should a pretty garden display be your aim, leave these side stems to help to produce it. Though pinks belong to the same family, their bud formation Is slightly different. You never have a branched stein, but usually on each stem there is a big. and a little bud. Remove the latter while it is quite small and yon won’t be troubled with calyx bui sting in such varieties as Mrs. Sinkins, while the flowers will bo better in form and substance.
