ALEXCELIA WINS AT STRATFORD

Sprint To Boden Park IMPRESSIVE FORM OF BATTLEDRESS By St. Simon. Several Trentham candidates were seen in action at the Stratford Racing Club’s spring meeting on Saturday, ana among them good form was shown by Battledress, Boden Park, Minority, Ring Chief, and the two-year-old Plato Lad. who, though defeated, created a good impression. , . The weather was fine, but with a cold southerly wind, and the track in easy condition. Unfortunately the meeting was allowed to get behind time, and finished 50 minutes late, the trouble apparently being due to the totalizator being insufficiently staffed to handle the money. . x For allowing Golden Wattle to interfere with Young Bill in the Trial Stakes, the apprentice jockey W. L. Aitken, was suspended for two months. Aitken is at present in territorial camp, but is. allowed Saturday leave to ride at meetings. The totalizator handled £19,580/10/-, a decrease of £179/10/- on last year s figures. Ten times the amount of the decrease was shut out during the day. Field Outstayed.

Siegall, now trained by S. MeGreal, outstayed the field in the Spring Hurdles. Rollicker took up the pace six furlongs from home but, as usual, he tired in the straight, where Siegall went ahead for a comfortable win. The hunter Last Match was an easy second, with Rollicker third. Chiltern, who was fourth, spoiled his chance by hanging out all the way. The favourite, Kanui te Pai, dropped his rider at the first fence. First Winner by Broiefort. The Blandford horse Broiefort was credited with his first winner when Broiefort Star won the Nursery Handicap, for which he was favourite and topweight. He was always prominent and had a good lead at the last furlong, but Plato Lad finished very fast to run him to a short length. Bright Gesture, who was one of the leading bunch,’ finished third, and Gay Polly was fourth, ahead of Clarice, who made the pace with the winner till she tired through lack of condition. “ The first five home were always out clear of the others. All In and Fox Queen, both from H. Dulieu’s stable, took no part in the race, the start being an atrocious one. Easy for Poutu.

Golden Wattle and Young Bill were the pacemakers in the Trial Stakes for two furlongs, where Golden Wattle ran in on Young Bill, putting him on the fence, cutting him badly, and sending him back to last. Rounding the turn, the favourite, Poutu, moved up, and. once he took charge in the straight it was all over, Poutu winning very easily. He is a half-brother to Ruatiti and looks a likely type of horse. Chef d’Oeuvre and Matarawa, who were both well back in the early running, came on for third and fourth, with Sir Plato and Princess Flavin best of the others. Megara bled, and Rosy Dawn was never prominent. Good Effort by Boden Park. Boden Park, who never looked in better condition, ran on solidly to stall off a late challenge from Minority and win the Flying Handicap. Olympus soon ran himself out as the pacemaker, and in the straight Boden Park tools charge from Tuatara and Ring Chief. Minority and Winsome Lu then put in claims on the outside and. Minority failed to get Boden Park by a neck only. Minority's run was impressive. Winsome Lu was third and Ring Chief, looking in soft condition, ran an excellent race for fourth. Tuatara weakened into fifth. Gold Dale bled badly and was pulled up. Brilliant Speed.

Prince Plato would have distanced the hacks in the Mahoe Handicap had he been ridden out. He won toy six lengths easing up and showing brilliant speed. Park Light was a comfortable second over the win favourite, Nuna, who had every chance but was not good enough. Stratford, last in the early running, finished on for fourth. Star Mark tired after chasing the leaders to the straight. Alexcelia Wins AU The Way. Alexcelia, from the same stable as Prince Plato, led all the way to win the Stratford Handicap, with two hurdlers, Tidewaiter and .Student Prince in the minor places. Student Prince accompanied Alexcelia throughout the race, but she worried him out of it in the straight and 'then held Tidewaiter at bay. Taurangi, last to the straight, finished well under her big weight for a close fourth. Impressive Win. Battledress gave one of the most impressive performances of the day to win the Budge Memorial of nine furlongs. Mountain Fox trailed Miuvaal till three furlongs from home where he took charge, but when they reached the straight Battledress strode to the front and scored with ridiculous ease from Gitana Lass who came on well with Ocean Breeze, these two filling the minor places ahead of Mountain' Fox, who weakened in the last furlong.

Won Jn Last Stride.

Gold Card, resuming after a spell since the winter, secured a favourable run on the rails to win the Farewell Handicap. Come True took charge entering the straight, but he was soon beaten off by Cetewayo who appeared to have the race won when Gold Card, finishing with great dash along the rails, got up in the last stride to win by a narrow margin. Come True, who tired, was a close third and Tavoy came home well for fourth with Martene and Davilia close up. Carbine Hero bolted before the race and was withdrawn. Investments were refunded.
