THE BUZZER AGAIN

Repeats Win In Chief

Event At Otaki SURPRISE BY DARK EAGLE Several recent race meetings have shown falls in • totalizator turnovers. Otaki drew a large attendance on Saturday but the turnover fell from £25,44 1 last October to £21,790. The reason for the Otaki decline might be that the meeting was held closer to the Wellington spring fixture than was the case last year—perhaps a little too close for investors of moderate means. But, as this is not the only decline of late, the fact may be that totalizator speculation has at last reached its peak. The Buzzer repeated a performance, of twelve months ago by winning the Ling Memorial; Dark Eagle staged the surprise of the day when he squeezed home in the open seven, and the Champion Hack event was won decisively by Kevin. Success Anticipated. Master Lackham having given pointed evidence at .the Foxton meeting that, he would win a hurdle race in the immediate future, was one of the best backed horses for the Kapiti Hack Hurdle Handicap, which he won convincingly. He was not allowed to lag in the rear on this occasion. He moved into a handy position three furlongs from home, deposed the favourite (Lucullus Boy) in the straight, and won at will. He should do better yet. Lucullus Bov and Regicide were always handy, and they filled the minor places. Regicide's chance was not improved by his crashing through the hurdle in front of the stands. Wakarara was an indifferent fourth. Miss Leighon made a poor showing. Far East was injured, and it was reported that he had been destroyed. Well-bred Maiden.

The Puhi Maiden Plate was run in two sections. Crucible jumped out clear in the first division and led all the way. Greek Dancer; who had been second at Hastings, was an easy second, with Miner’s Hope, Te Awe Awe, and Sir Bent next. Crucible is one of Mr. F. Ormond s well-bred fillies, being by Tiderace from Pure Gold, bv Psychology from Desert Gold. Her win was impressive, and she. is one to keep in mind. Her dividend on Saturday ran into double figures. Greek Dancer should soon graduate from the maiden class. Favourite Scores.

Bettors received very small dividends when Graeco-Roman won the second division. The’’lliad gelding was always wed placed. He led down the straight, but did not have anything in reserve to win by a length and a half from Swell Chance, who finished strongly. Greek Idol was third, and Trekalong (who made a fast run on the home turn) was fourth, with Broker’s Dream, Makarora and Quality following. Stayed Too Well.

A clear run next the rails, from the home turn to the finishing line facilitated The Buzzer’s task in . the Ling Memorial, but he won in solid style. He was near the tail of the field going along the back, and so decisively outstayed a,, his opponents that he would have been unlucky to lose. Meamea and .Blue Border made tiie early running from Last Acre and Happy Ending, with Piastre, Hunting Cat, Centrepoise and Dynasty following as they ran past the six furlong post. The order did not change greatly till the half mile had been passed, when horses from the back began to close up. Meamea and Blue Border were still going well on the home turn, where Happy Ending looked dangerous. Just when Happv Ending had settled the leaders The Buzzer dashed through next the rails, and, finishing in rare style, won by a length. Blue Border was only a neck behind Happy Ending and Centrepoise, never dangerous, was fourth, and after him were Piastre, Colonel. Bogey and Meamea. Piastre, favourite, was disappointing. Happy Ending is due soon. Legal Again. Legal, who had paid a big dividend in a field of maidens at Masterton, scored another attractive win by taking the Pahiko Hack Handicap. Lady Derby and Caroline Bay beat Legal out of the barrier, but Legal reached the, front quickly and was not headed again. He was kept going in the straight to win by a length from Deolali, who showed good speed and did wq.ll for a maiden. Caroline Bay, after having every chance, was a good third. Triple Crown was fourth, ahead of Star Zone, Stairway and Merry Fox. First Round Wins. First Round, favourite in the Katihiku Hack Handicap, stayed just a little too well for her opponents. , She was always prominent and led with Arabic and Ringcraft from Courting and Squeers. Ringcraft cried enough three furlongs from home, and Arabic weakened in the finish. First Round came on alone, but had to be ridden out to beat Kehua, who finished fast from the back and got to within a neck of her. Arabic was a good third, Courting fourth and Squeers fifth. Courting ran well for six furlongs, but receded in the last furlong.

Big Dividend.

A dividend which exceeded the half century was returned by Dark Eagle in the Hema Te Ao Handicap. The race was run over seven furlongs, a distance which played into the hands of Dark Eagle and Kentucky, who filled the leading places. Black Majesty led at a great pace, and with three furlongs to go was lengths clear, with Circular Note, Kentucky, Black Robe, Talenta, and Star Zone most prominent of the others. Halfway down the straight Black Majesty was in trouble, and as the field closed on him Dark Eagle and Kentucky came away to fight out the finish, which saw Dark Eagle victorious by a head. Black Majesty was a couple of lengths away, and Star Zone was fourth. Dark Eagle paid a false price in view of his Marton form, and Kentucky surprised even his friends, and his stablemate (Circular Note), still unready, was much the better backed. Black Majesty should be hard to beat at six furlongs. Riding Helped. An easy pace, early in the race, and the ability of Broughton to make good use of it, enabled Kevin to defeat the favourite, Gothic, comfortably, in the Mema Champion Hack Handicap. Kevin trailed the leaders to the straight, where he slipped quickly to the front, and Gothic had no chance of bridging the gap. Stella Lux was a fair third, and Myarion fourth. It was a poor field. Onc-Horso Race. Race Away gave nothing else a chance in the Tuari Hack Handicap, the fivefurlong event, with which the day ended. He was always in front, and won by six lengths from Erinscourt, with Soutane a poor third. High Morale fourth, and Ata I’uwhero fifth. Soutane disappointed many who over-rated her Levin effort. High Morale finished strongly from the rear, but was ten lengths behind the winner. Details Of The Racing KAPITI HACK H GiRDLES. of £l3O. One mile and a half. 2/2 MASTER LACKHAM, F.S.
