TOBRUK DEFENDERS
Replaced With Fresh Men (Received October 17, 7.10 p.m.) LONDON, October 17. Members of the Australian Imperial Force who have returned to Sydney as guards for German and Italian prisoners of war, said that most of the Australians who defended Tobruk in the early stages of the siege had been relieved, Any attack made on Tobruk would be met by fresh troops. Australian troops in the Middle East were fighting fit and anxious for action. They were being given excellent equipment.
The communique issued iu Cairo yesterday by the British General Headquarters in the Middle East stated that though Imperial patrols were again active on Tuesday night in the area outside Tobruk and during Wednesday in the frontier zone no engagements with the enemy resulted.
