MASTER CYKLON SUCCEEDS

Hastings Final Day BLACK MAJESTY SHOWS BRILLIANT SPEED (By St. Simon.) ' Clear evidence that racing in Hawke’s Bay is coming back into its own with steady and well-maintained progress was provided by the spring meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, which concluded at Hastings on Saturday. It was one of the most successful and enjoyable spring fixtures at Hastings since the setback the club experienced after the Napier earthquake, and the new stewards’ committee and the secretary, Mr. A. E. Wishart, have reason to feel satisfied with the progress of their efforts to restore horse-racing to its former high standing in the province. In spite of an unfavourable morning, which must have kept many people indoors, the attendance on Saturday was good, and the totalizator investments amounted to £15,518, compared with £14,778/10/- on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £26,203 10/-, an increase of £2770/10/- on the sum handled in 1940. The weather was wet and cold for the opening events, and the stewards decided to dispense with preliminaries, and sent the horses to the post 10 minutes before starting time. The main events were won by Master Cyklon and Black Majesty, and the nursery race went to Enthrall, a wellgrown Defoe filly who is the first foal of Nightlass. a Nightmarch mare raced by the late Mr. W. H. Ballinger. Enthrall is raced by Dr. C. Nigel Smith, Sydney, who paid 170 guineas for her as a year- ° Winner Loses Bridle.

Tidewaiter won the Tomoana Hurdles in unusual circumstances. He moved up to the leaders at the last fence, where he dipped badly on landing. His rider, A. Jenkins, was thrown up on the horses neck and in recovering he pushed the bridle off. Jenkins managed to gather a tight rein before the bit slipped out ot Tidewaiter's mouth, and with the bridle dangling below hie head, Tidewaiter was ridden desperately in the last •beat Son and Heir by half a head the coolness of Jenkins and his skilful recovery and punishing finish were warmly applauded. Siegall made the pace till two furlongs from home, where she slipped into a fence, which ruined her chance of finishing in the money. Son and Heir and Cherry Hunter and Makaia, who filled the minor places, ran very good Dozie Boy showed up prominently in the middle stages, and the race would wore him for Trentham steeplechase enßagements. . , Cheddington Again.

Cheddington, the first-day maiden winner, gave another impressive P e rf°™' ance to win the Trial Handicap. Greek Dancer, Condole, Cyprine and Ch eddington were well clear of the field throughou , and in the straight Cheddington . strode forward to an easy and impressive victory by two lengths from Greek Dancer, with Cyprine beating Condole for third. There was a big gap to Bonnie Scot and Captain Star, who beat the others home. Stayed On Well. Koi Ragi, an Arausio colt, tried to win the Juvenile Handicap all the way, and looked like doing it till Enthrall put in her claim in the straight. Ga ’ lop j°“ very truly for a green youngster, she ran Koi Ragi down in the last few strides to win by a narrow margin.. Ozel ran an improved race to finish third four lengths from the first pair, anu Glad Fox, who went with the leaders to the turn, battled on for fourth, ahead of Prairie Girl and Gnv Rajah. Fox Queen, the favourite, jumped out first, but soon fitted lm<* and was never a possibility. Gold Quest, a daughter of the-Auckland Gold Trail, showed nice speed to the uis tance. « Veterans Fight It Out The Russell Memorial Handicap was fought out by two veteran performer-sin Master Oyklon and Hunting Cat The pace for nearly a mile was slow, with Hunting Cat and Red Cat both P ul^ a » hard in front. Chote, on Master Cyklon, was the first rider to size up the situation and at the half mile he dashed Master Cyklon into the lead to secure the winning break and he retained it to the -post, though Hunting Cat ran him to half a length. Halley, who had the run of the race, was only a head away tmra and Red, Cat just shaded the favourite. Gay Mimic, for fourth. Had Red Cat been allowed to run along and use her natural speed she probably would have won again. Centrepoise broke his girth entering the straight and was pulled up before reaching the post. Stella Lux at Long Odds. The Glenaray Handicap for apprentice riders was won by Stella Lux who outstayed her opponents; with a solid tinishing run and returned win odds above a quarter of a century. She gave b. K. Pell who rides over hurdles as well as on the flat, his first winning mount. Indian Sun, Te Oriko, Tashi Lama and Kinkajoti were the leading bunch into the straight and while Indian SUn and Tashi Lama were fighting it out in the last half furlong, Stella Lux swept up on the outside and won going away by a short length. Ex-Pupil AU The Way. Ex-Pupil got away smartly and led all the way to win the Flaxmere Handicap. The race was marred by interference which cost both Roeon and Hugme what chances they had. Spliced, Lady Garvagh and Grand Chase, who were in the bunch which trailed the leader most of the way, finished on in the minor places with Ruling Moment and Roeon next. Roeon wag close enough at the finish to suggest that she would have participated in the stake division if she had obtained a clear run. Black Majesty’s Brilliant Speed. Black Majesty showed a dazzling burst of speed to run his opponents off their legs in the Final Handicap. He soon got to the front and never let the others in, winning easily by nearly two lengths. Screen Star trailed him throughout, but he tired and forfeited second place to Saxon Tor,’ who came home with great dash after appearing well beaten at the distance. Poutatau, the favourite, ran genuinely enough without making much impression on the three who finished in front of him. Flying Spy was travelling very smoothly turning into the straight, but she faded out when the pressure went on. Details Of The Racing TOMOANA HURDLES HANDICAP, of £llO.
