SPORT TODAY

Opening Of Rowing Season Outdoor sports just now are in the doldrums between winter and summer pastimes, and consequently there will be little doing in Wellington this afternoon. The most important event will be the official opening of the rowing season, which will take place at the Star Boat-, ing Club’s ehed in Jervois Quay. The Star, Wellington and Petone Rowing Clubs will all take part in the opening ceremony. Mr. W. J. Gaudin, president of the Wellington Amateur Rowing Association, will declare the season open at 2.30 o’clock. A meeting of captains of the clubs will be held at 2 o’clock to decide upon a programme for the afternoon. It is probable that rowers will be pooled, and social races held in whaleboats, fours, and pleasure boats. Afternoon tea will be provided, and it is possible that a tea dance may be held at 5 o’clock. Schoolboy Harriers. An interesting event on today’s programme will be the cross-country races for secondary and primary schoolboys, which will be conducted by the harrier sub-committee of the Wellington centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at Lyall Bay. These will be the first cross-country races for schoolboys ever conducted by the harrier subcommittee in Wellington. Boys under 17 will run over a three-mile course, and boys under 1.4 over a 2}-milc course. Golf. Miramat: Second qualifying round for vice-president’s trophies. Shandon: Bogey.
