Defences Not Caught Napping ONLY SINGLE PLANES GOT THROUGH

LONDON, July 28.

London’s first air raid for a month found the defenders fully prepared. The guns had been manned, balloons were in the sky, the A.R.P. at their posts and rescue and demolition squads ready after the long uneventful nights all went into action the moment the warning was given. The raid, according to reports from the outer districts, must have covered a vast expanse of the metropolis besides central London, where the drone of engines was several times clearly heard. The scene from a high window in central London was as enthralling as in earlier raids, with gun flashes lighting up the sky in rapid succession. Only the glare of fires was lacking.
