BIG DIVIDENDS AT MARTON

Rangitikei Hunt Club WINTER CUP HORSES DEFEATED Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N., July 27. The 1940-41 racing season was brought to a close in the North Island yesterday by the Rangitikei Hunt Club, whose annual race meeting was held at Marton. The weather was changeable, sunshine being interspersed with heavy showers, and the track was very heavy, the times recorded being among the slowest of the winter period in these parts. ■ Most of the fields were large, and they provided several surprises. In spite of these reverses, wagering was always brisk, and the investments £21,398 10/- (for eight races, the maiden being divided), compared with £16,998 for seven races last year, an increase of £4400/10/-. The Hawke's Bay hunter Summons scored his third win on end when he won the Rangitikei Hunt Cup Steeplechase, but he had little to spare from Hyderabad. The meeting did not throw much light on Riccarton prospects. Six Winter Cup candidates were completely routed in the Riddiford Handicap, while Dauber, the only Grand National Steeplechase acceptor taking part yesterday, was a very tired horse when he dropped his rider three furlongs from home in the Hunt Cup. However he whs carrying 391 b. above his Grand National weight. The Dozer, a Grand National Hurdles candidate, ran on the flat, and performed creditably, finishing not far from the placed horses in the Riddiford Handicap. Aussie Ra, who is also in the Grand National Hurdles, ran poorly in the hurdle race, but it was his first start since being injured at Te Rapa in May. Vengeance Wins Easily.

The bracelet event for amateur riders was won easily by. the win favourite Vengeance, who appreciated the heavy going. She ran past Rakete and Lacan to assume the lead before reaching the straight, and won unextended. Lacan finished too well for the three-year-old Rakete, who, however, went another useful race, and is improving. Kobika, a poor fourth, was easily best of the others. Narrow Win For Spliced.

The first division of the Glenmore Maiden was won by Spliced, a two-year-old half-brother by I’haleron Bay to Fiancee and Beau Mari, raced on lease by H. Dulieu from Mr. W. S. Glenn.

Swell Chance and First Girl made the pace to the turn for Spliced, who took charge halfway down the straight, where Matalite and Cyprine both came with late runs. These two ran Spliced to a close decision with heads only separating Outsiders Prevail in Hurdles.

Three outsiders in Haile Selassie, Stella Lux and Raana filled the places in the Rosebank Hurdles. Hagen led to the first fence, where he -struck hard and dislodged his rider, P. Jarvis, who was hit by several of the following field and suffered a broken collarbone and other abrasions. Hagen ran loose among the leading bunch and caused a lot ot trouble for the next two furlongs. Over the final three furlongs Haile Selassie, Stella Lux, Raana, Colibri and Surpai sorted themselves out from the others, but Haile Selassie quickly drew away clear and scored a comfortable win from Stella Lux, who just beat Haile Selassie’s stablemate, Raana. Colibri was fourth and Surpai, who tired badly in the last furlong, was fifth, ahead of War Lap and Segra. Gay Fox was with the leaders for a mile, but was galloped on by Hagen while he was running loose. Cartoonist lost his rider just after the first fence, and Pretty lass fell when leading five furlongs from home. _ Cuisinier and Aussie Ra never looked likely. Darag All the Way. The second division of the Glenmore Maiden was easily won by Darag, a three-year-old Bulandshar gelding raced by J. M. Cameron, of Hastings. He got to the front soon after the start, and once he drew clear he was never' in danger of being overtaken and won by a comfortable margin. Royal Talkie finished over the others for second, and le Awe Awe was third. Close Call for Summons. Summons won his third Hunt Cup when he took the main jumping event, but he had a close call, being pressed stride for stride by Hyderabad m the run from the last fence to the post. These two were in charge for the last round and a half, and provided an exciting contest. Beau Monde went a fair race for third, but was 50 yards behind the first two at the finish. Last Match, who finished a long way back fourth, led for the first five furlongs, and _showed himself to be a fast jumper. Dauber, the -win favourite, pulled hard behind the leaders for nearly two miles, but then tired under his big weight and nc unseated his rider three fences from home. Mansura’s Improved Form. Mansura, who showed signs of returning form at the Manawatu Hunt, came with a powerful run to win the Closeburn Hack Flying Handicap. He moved up around the field half-Way through the race and once in the straight he effectively settled the chances of his opponents Waimutu, Auburn Lad, \al Pere and First Round were the prominent runners at the final furlong and Vai lere battled on for second, just shading Gitana Lass who came from a long way back to reach third place Amazing Run by Hasten. Making his debut in open company, Hasten put in an amazing run in the Riddiford Handicap, going from second-to-last at the half mile to join issue wita the leaders, Screen Star and Meamea, as they swung into the straight. Meamea hung badly and took . Hasten out willi him, but once they straightened up Hasten bounded to the front. Meamea came at him again and after a desperate struggle over the last furlong Hasten got the verdict by a neck. Of the six winter Cup horses engaged, Autolite did best to finish seventh. Battle Guin,' the favourite, was in charge along the back, but was drifting back before reaching the straight. Augment and Royal Star II never looked likely winners. Big Surprise by Miss Leighon. Miss Leighon, saddled up for her second run on the day, created a big surprise to win the Springgrove Farewell Handicap, but there was no fluke about her success which was achieved in decisive fashion. The unlucky Halley, who has now run second at his last three starts, got to the front soon after entering the straight, but inside the disance Miss Leighon dashed up on the outer with a wonderful run and sped past Halley to win by two lengths going away. Halley was just as easily second and Vai Pere, also having his second start, beat the others to return third-place dividend. Ata Puwhero, who ranged up to the leaders at the home turn, was fourth ahead of Expellant and Ringling. Sweet Anne and Raceaway, who showed early speed, tired before reaching the straight.
