DAMAGE TO INNER AND MIDDLE TEMPLES
( Received May 29, 10.30 p.m.t LONDON, May 29. The Inner and Middle Temples, his- ' toric home of barristers and lawyers, are among the latest of London’s treasures to be shattered and set on fire in a recent raid. Half of the Temple buildings has been destroyed, the greatest loss being the Temple Church, built in 1185, which is now a charred shell. It has been described as the finest Norman church in Europe. The registers and valuable records were removed, including a gold cup which the lawyers presented to King .lames 1, whose charter gave them the freehold of the Tenip'e The tomb of Oliver Goldsmith was half-buried and the inscription written by Dr. Johnson destroyed. ■'
