THE MONARCH WINS

Second Day At Otaki DEAD-HEAT IN THE SPRINT (Bt The Watcher.) A win by The .Monarch in the principal event and a dead-hent between Noble box and Surveyor-General in the sprint, were features of the second day of the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s winter meeting, held yesterday. The weather was tine, but a fresh westerly breeze was very cold -and bleak. The going was in excellent order. The totalizator handled £12,004/10/-. The total for the two days was 10/-. The last time the club held a twoday meeting was in 1038, when the turnover was £26,033/10/-. Won All the Way. Gapie Pit made no raee of the steeplechase. He went to the front from the si art, and the only one that got near him was Puffing Billy. Puffing Billy actually beaded the winner down the back the last time, but Game Pit soon went away again, and over the last three furlongs Purling Billy tired, to be overhauled for seconjj by Glenvuue, who Ban a solid race, but lacked the pace of the winner. Colibri fell at the hencoop at the seven furlongs, when running" with Glenvane. The Wanton Improves. In the big field of 1S for the maiden event, only a handful showed enough pace ever to have a chance. They were the pacemakers, Royal Vision and Sandy Bay, who led to the straight, and Lucky Lulu and The Wanton. The Wanton, finishing on the outer, wore down Sandy Bay and Royal Vision just lasted long enough to keep bis head in front of Lucky Lulu. Lucky Lulu endeavoured to push through between Royal Vision and Sandy Bay at the last half-furlong, but there was no room, and she had to be pulled back. But for this it is probable she would have won. A Mild Surprise. Caution and Sceptre again made the running in the hack seven, and Sceptre led into the straight, but Kinkajou, who had run unsighted in the maiden the first day, had then moved up, and she finally went past Sceptre to win easily and pay double figures. Caution just lasted for third from Regicide, who had been slow away, and Defy was next. The Monarch’s Handicap. At the difference in the weights The Monarch was able to reverse places with Beau Ciel in the Timi Kara Handicap, the race also being run at a sound pace all the way. Beau Ciel had moved td the front with Trench Law from a handy position when the pacemaker Valerian retired on the turn, and Beau Ciel had charge at the last furlong, but The Monarch who had trailed the field in the running not far away, put in his claim and soon had the measure of Beau Ciel, to go on and win going away. Night Eruption and Trench Law were close up. Mittic was prominent to the turn, but failed to run on. Double to Talenta. Always well placed in the running of the hack distance event, Talenta took charge off the pacemaker, Pretty Lass, before reaching the straight and drew clear, never being in danger. Katesbridge, who had gone back to the rear in the middle stages after a good early position, finished with a great rattle in the straight to overhaul Titter and Myarion on the post. Dead Heat In Sprint. Noble Fox and Surveyor-General staged a desperate finish in the Taipua Handicap. After following Miss Te Koura and Endorsement in the running Noble Fox joined Endorsement entering the straight where Surveyor-General came on tile outside. Noble Fox was in the lead at the last furlong but SurveyorGeneral closed with him and got up to dead heat. Star Zone Just Wins.

Star Zone was always prominent in the last raee and except for being headed momentarily by Leighon Rei approaching the half she was always in front. Purlato took her on entering the straight but he soon weakened and finally War Credit came along with a strong challenge which took him to within a neck of the winner. He was also going the better, and would have won in another few strides.
