THE MYSTERY OF RUDOLF HESS

Although the public has been provided with considerable information concerning the manner of Herr Hess’s arrival in Scotland and his subsequent, movements, the background of the event still remains shrouded in mystery. But so far as his complicit)’ in the tyrannical acts of violence which have made Hitlerism a term of execration is concerned, there is no mystery at all, and it would be well for those who may be tempted to sentimentalism by the dement of glamour which seems to have surrounded his sensational descent from the clouds to look back upon the darker side of his personality and history.

To give lull measure to the record would occupy too much space, but readers would find in the "Thoughts of the Day” column on Saturday an illuminating fragment. There they would see that while Hess now declares that he is ‘Ted up” with the tyranny and miseries the German people are suffering, this man, regarded in Germany as the most faithful and incorruptible of Hitler’s associates, had no scruples about making a large contribution to the horrors and atrocities that plunged thousands of innocent people into death or insanity. In the name of Christian humanity the men responsible, and Hess is one. must be held to a strict and stern accounting. Any suggestion of making a hero out of Hess would be repugnant to the public sentiment of the civilized world
