BRIGHT SOCCER

Waterside And Swifts Draw

SEATOUN IN FORM

Marist, Institute And

Petone Win

With three games in the first round of the Wellington Football Association’s first A division competition played, only two of the 12 teams—Seatoun and the promoted Moera Stop Out—remain unbeaten. Waterside, who had had a loss and a draw in their first two matches, tried hard to improve their position on the championship ladder at the expense of Swifts, but again had to divide the points. Diamond showed encouraging form against. Seatoun, but Seatoun’s forwards had much more dash neatgoal and this proved the deciding factor. Marist proved too fast and clever for Hospital, andjPetone showed improved combination to beat AitForce. Moera Stop Out carried too many guns for Miramar Hangers and won by a margin of five goals. Institute and Technical threw the ball about in a bright game, but Institute gradually wore their opponents down to win by two goals. Results Seatoun 6, Diamond 3. Moera Stop Out 8, Miramar Rangers 3. Swifts 1, "Waterside 1. Marist 6, Hospital 1. Petone 4, Ait- Force 2. Institute Old Boys 5, Technical Old Boys 3.

CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE

Hard-Fought Draw. Waterside and Swifts had au interesting game on the No. 1 ground at the Basin Reserve and there was very little between them. Swifts were first to score and carried their slender lead into the second spell, but 'Watexside, who had been unlucky earlier, equalized after half an hour and the game ended in u draw 1-all. Cameron, the Waterside goalkeeper, showed the form which gained him New Zealand representative honours and stopped shots from all angles. At the other end, Healey was also in form, making several clever saves. Harris and Bolton were hard to pass and A. Longbottom was outstanding on defence. When they settle down properly Waterside will make matters interesting in the second round. The Swifts backs, Salisbury and E. Longbottoni, ;tre developing into a first-class combination and the reappearance of Chapman at centre-half strengthened the team. Baker, McCrory and Shankie were the pick of the forwards. Janes and Walker scored well for Waterside. Scorer for Swifts was Shankie. and for Waterside A. Janes. Referee: Mr. J. Duncan. Seatoun Unbeaten. 3 Seatoun continued on their winning way at the expense of Diamond, their greater decisiveness in front of goal being the deciding factor. Diamond staged u number of dangerous breakaways and with a little luck might ha_ye increased their score. The half was fairly fast and Diamond saw as much of the ball as Seatoun but could not finish oft’. The two Seatoun wingers. Gendall and Edmunds made man.'x openings for their inside forwards and Edmunds scored a beautiful goal. Seatoun led 4-1 at half time. Diamond infused more aggressivenessinto their play in the second half, but the game became ragged. Heath showed puce and cleverness in the Diamond forward line and Tucker at right-lull-back broke up many Seatoun movements. The Seatoun centre-forward. B. Yeoman, played up to his best, form and all the team worked hard. Scorers for Seatoun were B. Veonmn (3), Tanner (2) and. Edmunds (I). Eor Diamond goals were scored by Du Ecu (I). Heath (1) and Alexander (I). Referee: Mr. A. Aspen. Experience Tells. I’etoue did not by any means have matters all their own way against Air force in their match at L'elpi.te on Saturday, but their greater experience enabled them to win bv 4 goals to 2. Hop_kinson, Haywood anil Swales were prominent in the Air Force forward line, showing speed and clever footwork, but though they occasionally beat Hughes and Haines Shave, the L’etone goalkeeper, stopped every shot in the first spell. ! The l’etone forwards, nartieul.trly Les- | lie. Stewart and Craig, played with dash , amt combined much better than previous- , Iv. l’etone. who led 2-1) at half-time., hml t'l.e better of the second half till near th" end. when Air Force rallied and scored two goals. , o Scorers for l’etone were ( raig Leslie (1) and Stewart (.1 > ami for Al-’ Force. Hopkinson (2). Referee: Mr. J. Faeey. Comfortable Win. Showing superiority in all departments of the game. Mocra Stop Out beat Miramar Rangers by 8 goals to 3 on the Hutt recreation, ground. Rangers trud hard ami worried the Stop Out dclence •It times, but Bradley and Watson combined well at I'ttll-lmck. Mouatt, Donoghue ami Mildimhall were the most aggressive of lite Rangers forwards. It'iid. .leromsoti titid Sharp worried the

Rangers’ defence, but the whole team played well. Scorers for Stop Out were Bold (4), Jei-omson (1), Claridge (1), Griffin (1), Hicks of Rangers putting one through his own goal. Mouatt (2) and Donoghue (1) scored for Rangers. Marist On Top. Marist proved too strong for Hospital in an open game at Porirua and by halftime it was apparent that' they were not likely to be beaten. Hospital launched many attacks and frequently carried play to the Marist goal-mouth, but though they were often dangerous, their shooting was poor and they scored only once. Jeromson in the second half heading the ball past the Marist goalkeeper. The best Hospital could do was to force a succession of corners, but Marist cleared most of them. Marist led 2-0 at half-time and scored four more iii the second half to make the final score 6-1 in their favour. Among the Hospital forwards D. Gibb played well and Lambert at full-back used his weight to stop several Marist rushes. Nunns proved hard to pass in the Marist defence and Leonard played soundly in the forwards. Scorers for Marist were Price (3), Leonard (2) and Quirke (1) and Jeromson scored Hospital’s only goal. Referee: Mr. F. R. Callaghan. Institute’s Success. Institute, who had drawn with Hospital and been beaten by Air Force, scored their first success when they beat Technical Ohl Boys at Kclburn by 5 goals to 3. The first half was fairly even, both goalkeepers being called on more than once. Institute opened the scoring, Reid heading in neatly from a corner, but a Technical breakaway saw McCarthy score the equalizer, these being the only goals in the first half. Wrigley was hurt and was replaced by Liddicoat. Lattimer, Reid and Green gave the Technical defence some anxious moments in the second spell, but Hodson was sound at full-back and the Technical halves also worked hard. Showing good combination, Technical took the lead when Aitken finished off a bright movement, but from the kick-off Institute carried play to the Technical goal and Davies scored. Goals by Baxter, Lattimer and Green put the issue beyond doubt for Institute, but Technical staged a lastminute attack from which McCarthy scored his second goal, making .the final score 5-3 in Institute’s favour.
