Opening Of Autumn Art Exhibition The galleries at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts autumn exhibition at the National Art Gallery, Wellington, were crowded last night for the private view and opening ceremony. Not only were there present most of the usual members and artlovers, but there were also many new faces, surely indicating a greater interest • in,- and a deeper appreciation of art as a relaxation and a relief from the stress of the times. Ti/j whole atmosphere of these private views seems .to encourage relaxation while stimulating one’s interest in art, and there is a pre-war elegance in the beautiful gowns invariably worn by the women. The exhibition was declared open by the president, Mr. G. G. Gibbes Watson, and with him in the official party were Mrs. Watson, Sir .Harry Batterbee, Mr. and Mrs. W. 8. Almost 100 members and friends of the society gathered at Truby King House, Melrose, where Airs. 11. Aliss Woodhead, recently appointed matron of the Raritan'* Hospital, was welcomed. A charming brown ensemble Ims a plain frock with brown lamb buttons down Ihe front of the bodice.
