FINAL GALLOPS

Training At Hawera

STEEPLECHASERS GO WELL

Dominion Special Service. HAWERA, May 7. Final gallops for the Egmont meeting were conducted on the outside of the course proper at Hawera this morning, with the going holding. A feature of the work was the excellent schooling ot several steeplechase candidates. Among ’ flat performers to please were Piastre, Phyto. Endorsement, Circular Note, and Talenta. , . Grandora (Holland) sprinted two furlongs nicely in 25. His stablemate, La Rosita (Holland) recorded 24 in a similar effort. .Gitana Lass (Potroz) occupied 25A without being bustled. Notiuiu (Sexton) was noX after time when completing a mile at a working Salvation (Sargent) shaded Ringling (Dowrick) at the end of half a mile m 53. Both appear in good order. Vai Pere (Thomson) sprinted three furlongs in 374. . Piastre appeared to be going better than Last Acre at the end of a mile in 1.50, the last five furlongs in l.i. Piastre won the Egmont Cup on his last visit to Hawera, and he promises to take a lot ot beating again in the Mcßae Cup. Phyto and Trench Law were companions over seven furlongs in 1.34. lhe former bears a bright appearance Fly-by-Night (Waddell) and Tau-uru (Stewart) were on terms at the conclusion of half a mile in 524. Hagen shaded Eupatrid over five furlongs. the last three taking 401. The cup candidate. Authoress, who looks a picture, worked solidly over seven furlongs without being timed. Though not quite out of hack class, she should not be troubled to 'bridge the gap to open company. Filbert (Thomson) traversed seven furlongs in 1.35 1-5. Endorsement (Stewart) was hard held when running three furlongs in 40. She has become more solid with age, and should be hard to dispose of in her en-

gagements. Circular Note got to the end of five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. He is in good shape, despite several strenuous races lately. Bridegroom and Mataroa encompassed a mile at hurdle pace, requiring 1.12 for the last five furlongs. No fault can be found with their condition. Battlegain (Waddell) and Black Majesty (Thomson) traversed five furlongs in 1.6. Talenta and Katesbridge were together throughout a mile in 1.50 3-5, though tiie former pleased most. Iddo (A. Jenkins) and Kaiwaka (L. Dulieu) showed the way to Glenvane (G. Dowrick) over four steeplechase fences, brush, post and rails, sod wall and hencoop, and afterward the trio went on for another round on the flat. Iddo and Kaiwaka fenced splendidly, and they lack nothing on the score of condition. A similar number of obstacles were negotiated by Dozie Boy (A. Jenkins), and Ruling Star (J. Hayes), both completing their task in pleasing fashion. Hunting Chorus and Amigo have been

scratched for all engagements, and Disturbed is an unlikely starter in the Egmont .Steeplechase. ■ The Awapuni apprentice, J. Williamson, whose apprenticeship expired today, will be unable to fulfil riding engagements tomorrow. He intends to sign on for another period with the Matamata trainer, R. 11. Martin, but owing to unforeseen circumstances his clearance has not been passed in time.

Centrepoise in Work. Winner of the Metropolitan and Watkins Handicaps last season, Centrepoise was put back into active work again on the Hastings tracks recently after an enforced spell since last year’s 'WellingtonJanuary meeting. Now a five-year-old. Centrepoise has been hacked about since January, so that he was well forward when trainer 11. Griffith brought him back t< the track. He looks well, an,d should not take long to get back to his best form. Probably’ Napier Park at the end of this month will see him making his reappearance, and he will most likely also race at Hastings in June and Trentham in July.

Kentucky Derby Winner. The win of Whirlaw'ay in the Kentucky Derby in record time of 2.1 1-5 is of more than ordinary interest. This colt is one of the first of the American stock of the English Derby winner, Blenheim, who was purchased by an American syndicate from the Aga Khan. Whirlaway was the best of the American two-year-olds last season and the highest stake earner. He was the early favourite for the Derby and no doubt would hold his position in the markeij. He is the first juvenile champion to go on /to win the Derby since Morvlch in 1921. Last year’s champion, Bimeleeh. finished second. Incidentally the previous record at Churchill ■Downs for a mile and a quarter was Twenty Grand’s 2.1 4-5 in the Derby of 1931.
