HIGH PRICES

The sale of Beau Pete at £30,000 places him among the high priced horses of the thoroughbred world and he is easily first in horses sold from Australia or New Zealand. However, the price is substantially below those paid in the past for the best English horses. The record priced thoroughbreds are: —Call Boy, £60,000; Tracery, £53X100; Windsor Lad, £50.000; Blenheim, £50,000; and Solaria, £47,235. The record price paid for an Australian thoroughbred was £19,000, by Mr. A. E. Cooper for' Talking. Talking, however, was bought as a three-year-old before the Victoria Derby, in which race he took part. Heroic, sire of Ajax, cost 16.000 guineas, also as a three-year-old. Jleroic also continued to race after being sold. The grand-sire of Ajax, Valais, was sold as a sire for 14,000 guineas, and this is the record price for a sire in Australia. Other high-priced sires are: — Carbine, 13,000 guineas; The Night Patrol, 10,000 guineas; Rossendale, 9500 guineas; Pantheon, 7250 guineas; and more' recently, Marabou, 5500' guineas. When Beau Pere first went to America it was stated that he had 'been only leased, and would return for next stud season in Australia. As California recently passed a rule limiting race® to Cali-fornia-bred horsep conceived as well as located there, no doubt Mr. Louis B. Mayer considered it well worth his while to keep Beau Pere for all time. _ Many of California’s events are exceedingly rich in prize money. However money in itself is not likely to have been the all-importaul point for Mr. Mayer, the honour of winning some of the big prizes being more to his way of thinking.

Programme Altered. For its Easter meeting on Saturday and Monday, April 12 and 14, the Hawera Trotting Club has slightly altered its programme. The second race on each day, the Matapu and Ohawe Handicaps respectively, have been altered from a 3.45 to d 3.49 class, and the sixth race each day, the Manaia and Opunake Handicaps respectively have been altered from a 5.1 to a 5.2 class. Nominations close on Monday.
