VERSE ANTHOLOGY
“Modem Verse, 1900-1940,” chosen by Phyllis M. Jones (Oxford University Press). This volume makes the sixth in the anthology of English verse published in the World’s Classics series, and provides a well-chosen representation of modern work. The dates 1900 to 1940 are not particularly illustrative of the contents; Gerard Manley Hopkins, four of whose poems are included, died in 1889; and Richard Dixon, Oscar Wilde and Ernest Dawson in 1900. The editor’s intention, however, Is to reprint verse that has been popular and generally read during the last 40 to 45 years, and his selection serves this purpose admirably.
