GREEKS READY FOR ANYTHING

Athens Declaration ITALIANS’ LATEST BIG AIR LOSSES

(Received March 7, 9.50 p.m.) LONDON, March 6.

The Athens radio stated that the initiative on all fronts exclusively belongs to the Greeks. The troops’ morale is excellent, and they are ready for any developments unflinchingly. The Italian and German air squadrons are no longer facing lone fighters. The Italians have lost 53 planes in five days, against a loss of three British. Many of the Italian losses include the latest 300-miles-an-hour bombers, which are front-line machines that Italy can ill afford to lose. The building up of the Royal Air Force in Greece means that it today guards the skies while the Greek artillery silences the enemy guns, driving the enemy back. The sinking of an Italian transport by a Greek submarine is announced in an Athens communique, which states: “Toward midnight on February 23 a submarine spotted an enemy convoy of two large transports escorted by destroyers in the Adriatic. The submarine attacked with great courage and coolness and succeeded in destroying one of the transports.” The Athens night communique is the shortest yet. It says: “There have been patrol fighting and artillery activity.”
