HOME GUARD ACTIVITIES

Tliorndon Area.— There will be a route march for members of the Tliorndon Home Guard and E.I’.S, on 'Thursday. A baud will be in attendance. Home Guard N.C.O.’s have started field work. Signalling and transport units have been formed for all members of the Home Guard, and fire-fighting instruction for E.P.S. members continues.

Miramar Unit. — Since the formation of this unit one evening parade has been held each week, and a number of Saturday afternoon parades has also been held. The roll is now 150, and as fresh recruits continue to come forward the formation of a second company is proceeding. The evening parades have been given over to squad and platoon drill, the afternoon parades being devoted to company exercises and manoeuvres on the hills around Miramar. The sector to be allotted to the unit haw not been defined, but the whole district has been examined from different angles with a view to defence. Interesting work under competent instructors has promoted ail excellent spirit in the unit, and an N.C.O. class held weekly assures a supply of section leaders and platoon commanders for future needs Instructors for physical training and signalling have offered their services, and work under both headings will sbprtly commence. A pleasing feature in this district is the number of young men who have enrolled with the object of fitting themselves, to take their places in the territorial ranks when they attain the age for territorial service.

Roseneath-Orieiital Bay Area.— Good progress is being made with the training of the Roseneath-Oriental Bay unit in squad, arms and company drill. Route marches are held regularly each Thursday night, and they attract much attention. Parades are also held on Saturday afternoons at. 2, and as further enlistments are urgently required, intending members are requested to enrol immediately.

Island Bay Activities. —A well attended parade of the Island Bay unit was held nt the Island Bay School grounds on Thursday evening, when the training programme included company drill, section drill, physical exercises, and tactical instruction. About a dozen new members were enrolled ami the company is now parading three platoons. The officer commanding'the unit congratulated the company on its bearing on parade- on the occasion of last Sunday's public parade, and expressed the hope that al] ranks would continue to show the same interest in the training, which would be progressive as time went on. The N.C.O. class will engage in field training this ,'ifterg_',on. A signalling section is being formed ami a special class of N.C.O. trainees will attend .instructional classes for physical training. All men who have enrolled but have not yet been on parade are urged to attend the weekly parades which are held on Thursday evenings at 7 at the school grounds.
