■ 'T'ODAY I went for a four-m'ile climb tip to the trig. We starter! oft at 10 o’clock and arrived there art 12. First of all we had to climb some hills which were covered with thistles, logs and rocks. It was a hard, monotonous climb, and we were all glad to reach the bush. After resting for five minutes we proceeded along a narrow path lined with light green ferns and a small shrub with a crimson and yellow leaf that reminded me of autumn. There were 1< 's of other trees with their lower leaves all nibbled by deer. Further in the bush we saw a deer bath, which was just like a puddle. It was about three feet across and six inches deep and very muddy. All the surrounding tree trunks were covered with mud where the deer had rubbed themselves after their bath. We also saw plenty of deer and wild pig tracks. As we drew nearer the top the hill became covered with a small prickly shrub named snow-shrub. It is a dark green bush with a very hard leaf, and it is Impossible to get through unless there is a path. The path was very narrow and we had to push and crawl to get through. We arrived at the trig with very scratched logs, arms and faces. We spent an hour at the trig, resting, taking photos, and having lunch. The view from the top was lovely, out we couldn't see very far for haze. We saw all over Palmerston North, the outline of Mt. Egmont. and the scattered farmsteads round about which looked like the suburbs of a city. We wont home .the same way as we bad come and arrived with very stiff legs.- Flotsam (15), Pahiatua.
