Russian Diplomacy

Sir,—When Bulgaria had an opportunity of resisting Nazi efforts, Russia did nothing but stand aloof. We had reports from Bulgaria indicating that the workers in that country had been buoyed with the hope that the Russian fakirs would resist the infiltration of the Nazis.

How they could have this hope after the Russian-German pact and Russian action in Poland and .Finland —is beyond comprehension.. That they did have this hope was clear from the cable messages. That they 'have been let down like the workers in other lands, is pnly too clear. It is obvious that Russia made cat-paws of them while it suited her. She is now turning and scolding them for their inability to prevent the infiltration of the German hordes.

A cable message in your paper yesterday stated that Russia slated Bulgaria for allowing the German troops facilities to enter that country. The message went on to say that the Soviet Union was not in the position to support Bulgaria in carrying out her present policy. Could there be anything more cynical? Russia was well aware that the Germans were on the point of marching into Bulgaria and that for months they had been concentrating in Rumania for this purpose. Yet, not once did they offer any protest or give any indication of their disagreement with the aggressive policy of Germany. Alongside this cable message in your paper was another one of greater moment which indicates the insincerity of the Russian regime. This message states that a German fleet of 200,000 tons of tankers are to transport Russian oil across the Black Sea I It is obvious what Russia’s interests are. On March 3 there is no hope for Bulgaria, on March 4 there is to be plenty of oil for Germany to assist its attack on Bulgaria and possibly Greece. A few years ago I was one of those who insisted on a “hands off Russia” policy, but today the policy of Russia in working in collaboration with the enemies of the workers is nauseating.— I am, etc. DISGUSTED TOILER. Wellington, March 5.
