Four Men Sentenced In
Supreme Court
Four men came before Mr. Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday, on charges of breaking and entering and theft. They were Edward Wardle, railway cleaner and soldier, aged 22; Kenneth William Stewart, machinist, aged 19; Norman Wallis, labourer, aged 22; and Colin Chesney Dunn, labourer, aged 24. Accused had pleaded guilty to breaking and entering mouses in Petone, Wellington, and Palmerston North. His Honour sentenced Wardle, who had pleaded guilty to five charges, to 12 months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent with a term of two years’ imprisonment his Honour had imposed on prisoner for causing actual bodily harm. His Honour admitted Stewart to probation for 12 months, and ordered him to pay the costs of the prosecution. "I hope the Court will see no more of you," was his Honour’s parting injunction.
Wallis, who had pleaded guilty to four charges, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. “It is obvious you must have some discipline,” remarked Mr. Justice Johnston. Dunn was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment on each of two charges, the terms to be concurrent. Mr. F. T. Clere represented the Crown.
