A remit submitted by thq Christchurch City Council requesting the Government to amend the Municipal Corporations Act to provide for the payment of fixed allowances to members of city and borough councils or to compensate them for the loss of remunerative employment while on council business was defeated by a large majority at the conference of the Municipal Association of New Zealand. Supporters of the remit said there were cases of local body members who were penalized under the present system. Opposing speakers said local body service should be voluntary and not a paid job.
