ST. DAVID'S DAY

Welsh People Celebrate

Last Saturday, March 1, was St. David’s Day, and one of importance to Welsh people, as St. David is the patron' saint of Wales. Appropriately, the Wellington Welsh Society held iQ> annual dinner on this day. There was a large attendance. Air. S. A. Griffiths presided. The society’s president, Mr. John Tucker, was unavoidably absent from Wellington, but Mr. Rees-Jo.nes read an address from Mr. Tucker. The toast of Wales was proposed by the Rev. Mr. Skuse, and the toast of kindred societies, proposed by Mr. R. Morgan, was replied to by Mr. C. W. D. Bell, representing the New Zealand Founders’ Society. Mr. S. Griffiths, in proposing the toast to absent friends, read telegrams which had been received from other Welsh societies in New Zealand. Mr. lan Mackay, of the Clan Mackay, commented on the enduring music aud culture of the Welsh people, A short address ou Wales was given by Canon D. J. Davies, in which he stressed as the outstanding characteristic of all Welsh people their love of music, their desire for education, aud also their deep spirit of religion. A musical programme was presented, those taking part being Mrs. Wilman, Miss 8. Campbell, Miss B. Phillips, Miss P. Morgan, and Messrs. V. Jones, R. Morgan and J. Smith. The dinner was organized by Mesdames Morrisby, McLeod, Campbell, Jesson and Mr. R. Morgan.

The usual Welsh service whieh is held in connexion with the St. David’s Day celebrations took place on Sunday afternoon in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, and was conducted by Canon D. J. Davies, with the Rev. Gladstone Hughes as the guest preacher.
