A Lively Horse-Racing Romance In Colour

CINE of the finest combinations of talent assembled for one picture makes 2i.Hb Century-fox's lechnieolour production of "Maryland." an entertainment to which :rll movie-goers should look forward. A film of the turf, it should strongly appeal to Dominion audiences.

Henry King, director of some of the screen's greatest hits, undertook the important tusk of megaphoning "Maryland.” Cmier his watchful eye went a talented cast and production staff, and so it is not surprising that advance reports have hailed it as being even greater than "Kentucky." Walter Brennan, who was "Kentucky’s academy award-winning star, heads the cast of "Maryland.” . Always a fine interpreter of charatcer parts, he scores even more solidly in his newest role. Fay Painter, who won an award for her brilliant, work in "Jezebel.” has a role which should bring her new honours. Brenda Joyce and John Payne, two of the screen's newest lights, share the romantic honours. Charlie Ruggles and Marjorie Weaver are other bright personalities in the

cast. Hattie McDaniel, who won an academy award as the lovable “Mammy” of “Gone With the Wind,” has a. similar role in ■’Maryland.” The romance, colour and tradition of the proud South have been blended into a powerful story with a lively climax as stout-hearted racing thoroughbreds compete in Amerea’s most spectacular steeplechase, the Maryland Hunt. Cup Race. The spectacle of flaming silks flashing against blue sky and green turf is one that every New Zealander will appreciate.

MORRIS soon will bring to the screen one of the most famous fiction characters of two decades ago. under the terms of a new contract he has signed with Columbia. Morris is moving to Columbia to star in the “Return of Boston Blaekie,” first of a series based on the adventures of the lovable confidence man created by Jack Boyle. Rochelle Hudson, who is under long term contract to Columbia, will co-star with Chester Morris in this film.
