SIR HAMILTON HARTY DEAD

Famous Conductor And Composer LONDON, February 20. The death has occurred of Sir Hamilton Harty, the famous conductor and composer, in Sussex at the age of 60.

Sir Hamilton Harty was born in Ireland where he studied the pianoforte and viola at a very early age. Later he specialized in pianoforte accompaniments and toured with the great violinist, Kreisler, iu 1910. In 1920' on the recommendation of Sir Thomas Beecham he was appointed permanent conductor of the famous Halle Orchestra of Manchester. He occupied this post, for 12 years. He was appointed a director of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1933.

In 1934 he made a tour to Australia, where he conducted concerts and founded an orchestra. He also toured the United States. Latterly he was regularly conducting all leading English orchestras.

As a composer his best known work i.s the Irish Symphony. He has also written a pianoforte concerto and a violin concerto together with other orchestral works and instrumental solos.
