HAWERA TRIALS

Trio For Woodville Dominion Special Service. HAWERA, February 20. Conditions were ideal for training operations at Hawera this morning, when the feature of the work was the final gallops of the local trio engaged at Woodville, Southern Blood, Filbert and Stencil. They are to travel by float tomorrow. Both the plough and the course proper were fast.

On the plough Stencil (Holland) shaded Notium (Thomson) at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.164. No rider has yet been secured for Stencil in the sprint at Woodville, but if she is well served in this respect she may give a good account of herself. Notium is to race at Bulls next week. A smart trial over the same distance was credited to Filbert (Potroz), and Vai Pere (Holland), the pair completing the journey in 1.16 3-5, after requiring 51 4-5 for the first half-mile. Filbert is an improved hack, and is expected to run prominently in highweight company on the Woodville track, where he has previously been seen to advantage. T. Tito will have the mount.

Southern Blood (Cole) and Student Prince (Thomson) ran the last half-mile of a round of strong work in 524. The former is quite pound after four recent races over the fences, and promises to be in great order when the jumping season commences in earnest. Unless an easy truck is encountered at the weekend he may not be produced. Tavoy (Mills) reeled off half a mile in 49 2-s, 'hitting out in bold fashion. Air Flight (McDonald) traversed five furlongs in 1.3. Ring Chief (Ryan) infused plenty of dash into his task when getting to the end of three furlongs in 36. He has developed into a fine stamp of youngster. Martene (McDonald) was not after time in completing five furlongs in 1.10. Gitana Lass (Thomson) sprinted half a mile in 524 on the course proper. Battledress (Holland) and Barry Boy (Thomson) ran three furlongs smartly in 37 1-5, with the former holding the advantage at the post. High Tone (Thomson) and Rena Ra (Graham) occupied 38 in a similar effort. W. M. 'Thomson is to ride Kriemhild at Woodville. He is available for other mounts as low as 7.2.

Sham Boy Case. There is one rather interesting aspect of the Sham Boy-Circular Note case that would not be presented in the appeal proceedings (says the ‘Timaru Herald”). The race was the last on the Waikouaiti card, and the deputy who was allotting penalties for Oamaru, possibly unaware of the inquiry, issued a rchandicap for Sham Boy. At Oamaru the trainer ,of Sham Boy objected to this, and on the facte revealed the Oamaru stewards rightly removed the penalty. Sham Boy ran and won at Oamaru with his original weight. By this objecting, the connexions of Sham Boy apparently accepted the Waikouaiti decision, as the Rules of Racing state that where an appeal is made both the horse first, past the post and the one to which the race is awarded shall be liable to penalty or rehandicap. The Sham Boy people would, if they had succeeded in their appeal, have been in the position of having their cuke and eating it, too.
