CUP WINNER

Doubleack’s Challenge Succeeds NOTES AND COMMENTS Palfrey’s First Win (By The Watcheh.) The Dunedin Cup winner Doubleack is a five-year-old gelding by Balboa from Morse Signal. It is not a Stud Book family and Doubletiek provides another instance of the sire qualities of the delunct Balboa. Doubleack has won only once previously this season, the yudham Cup on New Year’s Day. He has been very consistent anti in bis last previous sturt he was second in the Winton Cup last week. He is trained at Invercargill by R. E. McLellan for Messrs, Gilligan and Govan. Last Year’s Winner. Sparkle, third in the Dunedin Cup yesterday, has not won a race since shy scored her surprise win in that race 12 months ago. Recently, however, she has been showing signs of recovering form, and she ran second in tin* Wyndham Cup to Doubleack, running which was strikingly reliable for yesterday’s event. Surprise Winner. Kaspian, who brought off an outstanding surprise in the Waikato Hack Cup, was formerly with J. W. Catbro at Matuniata, but. he is now with A. Cook at Te Awamutu. He had a. long spell before resuming racing at the Matamata meeting, which is probably the reason he eaught his supporters unawares. Appeal Lodged. Mr. O. l'\ Watson, owner of Sham Boy, lias lodged an appeal to the Racing Conference against the decision of the Dunedin District Committee upholding the verdict of the Waikouaiti Judicial Committee. Sbaiii Boy, who won at the 'Waikouaiti meeting, was relegated to second place in favour of the second horse, Circular Note, on the grounds of interference.

Art Union Colt. Those who write in for tickets in the Art Union for which the Siegfried colt 'War Effort is the prize, should note that, the price of each ticket is 5/-. Some inquiries have been received containing less than the correct amount. His First Win. Palfrey, winner of the Dunedin Champagne .Stakes, was enjoying his first success, but he ran well here last month, finishing fifth in each of the races won by Monetary, and running on. Palfrey nan a good race at his last start to run third in the C.J.C. Middle Park Plate to Pleading and Monetary and it is apparent that he is improving. Palfrey is one of the first of the stock of the Manawatu horse Man's Pal and he was bred by Messrs. G. A. Kain and G. Fulton. He is a half-brother to Scratchinere Scar, his dam, Vennachcr, -being by Martian from Snmisen, by Birkenhead. Palfrey cost Mr. Ebb Hay 230gns. at. the National Sales, and, like all Mr. Hay’s horses, is in the stable of T. H. Gillett. A Good Recovery. . Yogi, whose lameness had his connexions seriously -puzzled three or four months ago, has done well since being turned out toward the end of last year. He has made a complete recovery earlier than was expected and is now ready to come in from the Karaniu property to join Kathbella, Burra Sahib and others of -Mr. F. Ormond’s team at present in work at. Hastings. Well-Bred Maiden. Parlance, the maiden winner at Dunedin yesterday, is a four-year-old gelding by Paladin from Impertinence, by The Ace from the Great Easter winner. Miss Minnie, by -Sanquhar-Counterfeit, by Treadmill. Parlance did no racing prior to this season, and his first start was at the Dunedin meeting last Christmas so he had been given -plenty of time. This, and the fact that he is from one of the Stonyhurst families, may ensure him a successful future career. Iddo Returns to Trail:. Iddo, who won three hurdles races and a middle distance flat event two seasons ago. but who has uot raced since June, 1939; has been put into work again on the Hastings tracks. Formerly owned -by the late Mr. George Luttrell, Iddo is now being trained by Wallace Young for Messrs. J. M. Gill and G. Hargraves. At present he is being given only comparatively light tasks. Very Well. Siglow is very well at present, judging by the way he won at. Te Itapa (says the “Auckland Star’’). He finished on in great style in the Puketaho Handicap, one mile, on Saturday, and won going away. On Monday he had a great battle with Augment over the last part of the Te Bore Handicap, run over a similar distance, and just got his nose in front on the post. Siglow has raced well thio season and has so far won four events, while he has been placed in several others. Christchurch Hunt. A successful financial year, resulting in a surplus ’of £776/12/4, compared with £682/9/- in the previous year, is shown in the report of the Christchurch Hunt Club, to be presented to members at the annual meeting on .February 26. In his report, the chairman, Mr. Gilbert Grigg, sajd the increase was largely due to the last race meeting, which was the best the club had held. The surplus would have been larger but for the fact that the club was now liable for income tax, £193/7/5, having been paid under that heading. Out of Hacks. Monte Cristo ran out his hack engagements successfully by taking a doubletile Linley and lluntly Hack Handicaps —at the Waikato meeting. He has now won three races this season, and with one victory last year his total stakewinnings amount to £770. Monte Cristo is by the New Zealand Derby winner Bronze Eagle, sire of a number of useful horses, while his dam, Archeno, is an Archieetown mare bred in 1919. Monte Cristo should prove to be a payable proposition in open company, as he stays on well in his races and has good speed. Likely Youngster. A juvenile engaged at Woodville who gave promise at his last outing is Royal Melton, a half-brother by Bulands-har to Jenny Diver, Mcllenth, Miracle, Lockit, and Segra, and trained by D. N. Dueker for Mi-. W. C. Whitfield, of Napier, who bought him for 325 guineas from the estate of the late Mr. J. S. McLeod. Royal Melton has had three starts, and at Hastings on January 2 he finished strongly from the rear to be third to Caroline Bay and Gay Genet. Woodville Riders. Additional riding engagements at Woodville are:—P. Burgess. Locrian, Takahe, Daljarroek, .and possibly Maharajah, if started in hack seven; N. Vaughan, First Round, Makarora, Gold Craft, and Maharajah, if started in hack distance event: S. Waddell, Namesake: P. Williams. Galteemore: and F. Boyer. Royal Vision.
