WELLINGTON HOME GUARD

Activities Of Units Melrose-Houghton Valley .--,Mme recruits were enrolled al the MelroseHougiilon Valley parade of the Home Guard on Monday night. The N.U.O. s class is going well under the instruction of Sergeant-Major K. Martin, who gives two evenings a week to ihe unit, lhe next parade will be held on Monday, February 24, at 7.30 p.m., at the Houghton Valley School grounds, when instruction will be given on the Lewis gun. Intending recruits will be welcomed at this parade, for by joining the unit now they will be able to receive the elementary instruction that may not be available when the unit passes on to more advanced work.

Johnsonville. —There has been an erage of 3S members of the Home giltard present at the Johnsonville unit's live parades. All ranks are keen, ami an N.C.O.'s class of 10 men has been formed. Recruiting, however, is still slow, but a company of 150 should be possible trom the manpower of this area. Hntaitai. — Recently events have moved rapidlv with the E.l’.S. units and the Home'Guard in the Hatailai district. An effective response has been received trom the canvass of the district. .Members ot the E.l’.S. have been parading at tincentral tire station, where keen interest is being displayed in the instruction in lire fighting work. The military section is now organized into platoons. In addition to squad drill, which has been the principal instruction given up to the present, instruction in musketry has niso been given. To speed up elementary work so that this unit can get down to instruction in the work they will be called on to perform in the event of an emergency, Saturday afternoon parades are being held. The Hntaitai units also assisted the Kilbirnie and Sealoun units in the rallv held last Sunday. Miramar. —Eighteen new members were enrolled ami a start made with physical training at the .Miramar district's Home Guard paratie on Tuesday evening. After the parade a large number of members formed an N.C.O. class and were addressed by the commander. Mr. I’. J. McCarthy. The next parade will be held on Saturday afternoon at 215 p.m., when tactical exercises will he held on the neighbouring hills. Intending recruits are advised to enroll without delay. Eastbourne Unit. —Last week the membership of the Eastbourne unit ot the Home Guard was 120. This week it has grown to 14-1. and on Wednesday night there were no fewer than 140 members on parade. During the evening the unit marched through tlie borough, treating considerable interest. Major Kirk was in command.
