NATIONAL SAVINGS

First 100,000 Accounts

Opened

CONTRIBUTORS THANKED

The opening of the first 100,000 national savings accounts was; announced last'night by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser. He said that this excellent result, following closely as it did the announcement by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, that the firs £1.000,000 had boon subscribed thtougn national savings, indicated that more and more people iu the Dominion were realizing the need for every individua to make some contribution toward tut country's war effort. . . Mr. Fraser thanked those citizens who had responded in such a splendid manner to its appeal for national savings which had been launched a te'v months ago. He said that during tte past months, the principal aim of that campaign had been to swell the rail’s of regular contributors to Ute country's war effort by getting people to open national savings accounts. “New contributors are joining the national savings movement every day and they realize, without, my reiteration, that a national savings account, steadily added to, is the best possible means of supporting our forces.” said the Prime Minister. “At the same time. I am not overlooking the 34,000 people who have purchased national savings bonds. They, too, are playing a valuable part, but I would stress the powerful effect that, can be obtained in marshalling our financial resources by regular contributions through national savings accounts.

“To all these people who have so willingly and so generously responded to the national savings appeal and who, by denying themselves some of the pleasures pnd comforts they . would otherwise enjoy, have thus assisted tn the Dominion's war effort, I extend sincere and grateful thanks for their patriotic spirit. "And now a word to the now rapidly dwindling majority who have not yet opened these accounts. I appeal to them for immediate support. Buy only those things you really and urgently need. Lend the money you save to the country, to be spent for war purposes. Your contributions are needed now. Please don’t delay.”
